Don't worry about the magical 8 hrs. If you have slightly shorter sleep cycles, or fall asleep quickly, your natural rhythm could easily be much shorter but still be enough to be well rested.
Your wake up time sets your sleep clock: You have to keep it consistent, even on weekends. What else works for me? Going to sleep—I don't mean getting ready for bed—by 10. Taking sublingual melatonin—not a generic brand—earlier in the evening. (Sleep doctors generally recommend 0.5mg at 6 & again at 8. But that makes me tired too early. So I do it at 8 & at 9.)
