I stopped using my SM7 because it had too much bass. I now use an MD421 with a windscreen for VO.

Almost every sit-down you-tuber I see has some huge mic on a fancy stand. I'm sure it's just for looks.

I don't do that stuff. But if I ever did, I do have Shure SM57 in a cupboard. Probably have the cable to plug it into my MOTU interface too. This stuff has been staple on stage for decades. And it is not expensive. Wouldn't it be just as good?

7B has an apparently upgraded humbucking coil, resonance chamber behind the capsule, robust windscreen, and grille that prevents you from engaging maximum proximity effect on the 7B unlike the 57. Apparently a slightly different part but the capsules seem the same. I've been into mics lately, the sE V7 is a remarkable value thing.

7B has a high pass filter baked in for reduced bass, or they could just speak into the mic from further away though that'd diminish SNR if in an untreated space.

@Thad E Ginathom The SM57 is indeed a standard for live sound performances but I know MANY performers who hate them and the way they sound. I don’t know a ton about mics being a bassist/guitarist and not a vocalist, but I have a vocalist friend who also runs live sound professionally and last I heard he prefers to use Beta 58’s for his standard vocal mics.

@DigMe dan Beejar delicately holding a ‘57 in between his extended fingers. The haters can’t take that away from me

I've rotated through some common staples like the SM57, SM58, AT2020, Blue Spark, AKG D310, a few other odds and ends, and right now my favourite is the SM7b.

I once knew a grizzled vet of the live audio industry who described the SM57 as “a mic you can stir your beer with.” No one knows what it means, but it's provocative.

It means you can use it to beat drunken hobos off the stage and continue with your gig.

@gsanger That is funny, but not entirely true. I have seen 57's toasted because of water/moisture damage. One fell into a cup of coffee...it produced a sound, but not a good one.

And @Lyander you are absolutely correct. The cage actually makes it less versitile to me beause you can't get it close enough and the bass chamber is too much. I wonder if their new SEv7 is a PG58 diaphragm. Certainly cheaper build. I just can't get past their grainy sound and the low-mids is just too much, at least for my voice.

@Azimuth might be missing something but the V7 isn't a Shure mic so I doubt it has a PG58 assembly; it's just a relatively new mic that I brought up as a way to illustrate how there seem to be lots of viable alternatives to the classic SM57/58 nowadays.

Could have gotten confused with the Shure MV7, which is like a more "content creator"-oriented SM7B?
