Worse than the electric coil, it's a halogen/infrared cooktop. It doesn't even do "medium" settings properly, it just flashes the cooktop on and off.

I started off trying to season on the bbq, but it was just too windy today and I couldn't get it hot enough there either. I should have just used the oven. It wound up stinking up the place on the stove anyways, so I should have done it in the oven. Oh well.

Doesn't look so bad for the first couple coats. Does it pass the egg test?

??? It's supposed to just seal the metal. Anything further builds up with time and use.

    I thought?

I cheated with a healthy dose of oil lol. Thought my first cook was frying up some soft tofu which fared quite well.

This has been my year for finding good deals on cleavers. Found the Wusthoff 6” chopping cleaver a few months back for $20. Last week found the Shun Chinese slicing cleaver for $70 and it appears unused and still with sharp factory edge. Found it at an estate sale where they had the Shun Classic 21 piece set. They knew what they had so they priced by the piece but still, they were mostly like 1/3 of the new price from Amazon and they looked mostly unused. I’m actually not a big Shun fan - for the price new I’d go with a smaller Japanese independent forge but at this price it’s a great knife and I’ve been wanting to get a slicing cleaver. I passed on the chef knives and whatnot because I have plenty of those.

hilariously I went to look at the cleaver again and this lady was like, “Oh, I’m buying these.” She thought she was about to get that whole $1600 set of knives for $150 but that was just for the 6 steak knives. She had no idea what they were.

Not surprised the cleaver didn’t get a lot of use as a lot of westerners think it’s only to break down big cuts of meat. They only had it to complete the set so this is a great find

yeah, most of the pieces looked near new though. I think the set probably wasn’t that old. Pretty much everything these people had was premium name brand. I also got a couple of Tripp Lite surge protectors for 10 bucks that sell for $55 each and a brand new-looking Black Diamond headlamp for 5 bucks.
