Which is why I use headphone bags or other soft things to place them on ;)

@cskippy I think there is always a tradeoff with these kinds of things. While I would agree that putting them on stands adds increased stress to the headband, one could also make the case that laying them flat increase could the risk of scratches and dings (especially when you combine wooden cups and my clumsiness).

Personally, I have 2 WooAudio stands (1 single and 1 double) that hold a total of 3 headphones on top of a table/credenza that sits against the wall opposite my desk. I keep the rest of them in a collection of headphone cases in cabinets under the credenza. For headphones that have wood cups or need some extra padding, I have bought a few of this case on amazon and it seems to work pretty well. I've shipped everything from TH900 to HD800 inside of it and it has kept everything safe and intact. I also have a few of those cheap Slappa cases they sell on amazon and those work pretty well for smaller form factor cans like HD6X0.

I also ended up getting one of those giant mouse pads that sits on my desk that I can use to temporarily rest whatever headphone I have on at the moment if I need to without worrying about scratching the cups.

The headphones that I keep on the stands on top of the desk more or less constitute the "rotation" of 3 that I happen to be using most often at any given time. While it is somewhat of a pain to get one out from the cabinet underneath, it's the best organizational system that I have been able to come up with so far. Headphones have such an awkward design that no storage system is perfect.

This system works pretty well for me, but I am always open to finding something better :)

I hang my headphones on a Woo Audio headphone stand and clean the dust covers once in a blue moon.
