Lots of talk about HD650, but what about us who enjoy bass?

Missed the ~$1K part, sorry. Never tried EL-8, but reviews are ruthless.

And again I've always condisered "basshead" to have bass quality not quantity—my mistake, I guess.

Try HD800 out of an amp with 120 ohm output Z. That will increase bass response at its 100Hz resonance peak. The other alternative is adding big resistors in series with the cable. This does work.

I read this thread, and all I think of is warrenpchi @ head-fi.

    He's the king of pain....

to add to that, at every meet I ever been too, if I'm talking to 5 headfiers 2 of them have had audeze's that they have had to replace due to quality issues multiple times. Add to that the price. At $500 for a nonfazored lcd2 rev2 I would recomnend it for a relaxing listen.

I never heard about it, so I'm just as curious as you guys. My guess either Zack or LFF headphone. Most headphone manufactures don't like it around these here parts. they don't like how we pick on their phone line up despite the fact that it usally means we recommend the most expensive one's.

@purrin how's the bass compare to the he400(OG)?

I've always secretly wanted an XB1000.

That said, all headphones make compromises. To get great bass and excellence all around, you've gotta pay.

Denon, Fostex, and JVC all have some pretty epic basshead cans that do well across the board (sometimes requiring EQ). E-MU/Creative has a new Foster-made headphone coming as well.

You can also pay a lot for more targeted bass cans from the likes of Sony, Ultrasone, and Final Audio.

Or less for targeted cans from JVC, Sony, V-Moda, Monster Beats, Sennheiser, and many others. I'm past bothering with these junkers.

I like bass. A lot. Have a subwoofer built into my house - will take the garage door off its hinges at full swing. My main system is -6dB @ 18Hz with a smaller sub (relatively speaking) x-over at 30Hz (24dB/octave). I'm saying this as a new guy to give an idea as to my perceptive. IMHE, the best (quality-wise) bass and the most bass, that doesn't resemble having one's ears hit with a baseball bat, comes from bass-modded K702. Everything is there - definition, articulation, detail, slam, weight, and an unyielding sense of drive. The bass is powerful and dynamic. It's exciting and involving. Doesn't sound like a dead fish.

What's the consensus on the SRH1540? They seem to be fairly bass heavy and even come with the Innerfidelity seal of approval.

Shure not for the hardcore basshead who demands their ears be shaking, but when I heard them they were quite good. There's a discount at BuySonic right now as well (saw a link in the Head-Fi deals thread earlier today). I've very nearly purchased them a few times, but I prefer my HD650 for fast genres and my JVCs for bass genres. 1540 is good all-rounder bass-capable headphone.

Didn't Massdrop have a fostex prototype at one point? What ever happened to that?

I only heard of this from other more-informed folks, and this just might be what Marv is excited about.
Marv loves bio-cellulose membrane drivers and the look and feel of Fostex TH-XXX series (and probably loved the old Denon headphones too).

I have been hunting for a good condition Denon AH-D7000 for a long time now after I heard one at a friend's house. This may just fit the bill if it has the same fit and finish and sound (and more BASS).

Nah, it doesn't fit me, man. But thanks for your concerns!

    :bird:

Seriously, though, me thinks Oppo PM-3 is a decent option that no one seems to be looking at right now. Sure, it's not as resolving or detailed, but seriously, I don't think any closed-back headphone on the market currently is that detailed or resolving anyway.

I'm very interested. I'll be watching this thread. I've long considered the TH900, despite its' flaws (I thought it was TOO bassy for extended sessions, but I loved the fast decay).

One question: Dynamic or ortho? I'm assuming ortho.

I would argue the Mad Dog is pretty decent, but I've only compared it to the PM1 and PM2, not the PM3. That would probably be a great shoot-out though.

If it were Zach I would honestly feel a little hurt. I talk to the guy often enough and closely enough to feel that I would hear new news as soon as anyone else. Zach is working on things, but nothing that sounds similar to what purrin is describing, nor is it even a prototype yet.

I wonder if Audeze ever gets hurt reading Changstar/SBAF.

To me, they deserve every bit of criticism they receive. The products are generally overpriced and uncomfortable (and the EL8 is horrdendous sounding, seemingly unanimously...how did they screw this up!?) But this is really the only place that levels the criticism appropriately.

A modded PM-3 was also what I thought of when Marv dropped the initial hints. Fun, tactile bass. Shame about the non-existent soundstage though.

I think PM-3 is better than PM-2, which is better than PM-1. Honestly, I think AZ should have started with PM-3.

I did try to mod the PM-3, and I think I got somewhere. Now if only I can sell off the stuffs I don't use so that I can get another PM-3 to finish modding... hahahaha

Maybe Audeze will step up their game after seeing their headphones demoted off Tyll's Wall of Fame. Doubt it though, the LCD4 is the prime example of their refusal to change.
