So it was lies spread by MD's competition?

"Concerns", before the devices were built given a demo picture at Massdrop.

If Mayflower is still spreading this, then "concerns" my ass. It would be flat out bullshit.

This is indeed how the device looks like:

Note it is all metal chasis. And black. No ridges. Smooth. Nice. Except for all the interface being crammed up in the front! Per NwAvGuy's laws of physics.

Is Creative Commons even applicable? It's my understanding that CCL applies more toward artistic works or content, not design. One can copyright a statue, photo, sculpture, but one cannot copyright an O2 design. The O2 design must be patented. It's my understanding that they are working on a CC equivalent of patent, but they are not there yet.

Mayflower likes to bash the competition in general. e.g. bad-mouthing Schiit for their "$10 amp in a $50 chassis" and "blowing up headphones".

Dunno. Either way, NwAvGuy's bible says you shall not use alternative parts, other than the chosen ones in the O2 holly scriptures. Some folks will go jihad if such things were to happen.

And Mayflower has a reputation, from what I've heard here and there, for poor quality control.

Wow, $150 for an O2? That's somewhat overpriced. The proper price for it should be $89.

The JDS Labs custom O2+ODAC is fairly well built outside of the O2 power switch sucking. If you press it down slowly as you're tired, you can get Asgard 1 style popping.

    LOL!

    JDSLab's vs MD:

    http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/94202-jds-labs-vs-mayflower-electronics/

"ours will increase your bass response 10 fold and increase the sibilance. Ours also has smoother highs and faster mids." - MD

And they are following NwAvGuy's bible? Really?

    Quality:

JDSLab's O2 seems to be considered better quality than the MD one. But from memory, it can be also more expensive.

    Massdrop sells it for $79.

    I couldn't say. I've only witnessed their bashing first-hand.

I've never seen an assembled O2 for less than $120. $90 sounds right for a DIY kit.

Well gee, could it be maybe someone decided to improve on the spec and get rid of the stupid self imposed limitations for wanking purposes?

Why hasn't someone just ripped it off entirely yet and reduced it to actual portable size. Come to think of it, it's probably already been done and got thrashed because then people weren't afraid to call it crap because it wasn't protected under the O2 "status".

Oh shit. I missed indeed his "No, there is no audible difference."

    Oh well.

Cheaper, prettier, and there is not audible difference. Why the hell would I get Tyller's then?

That is hilarious. Harold stipulates that anyone can profit as long as nothing is changed. I really doubt Massdrop is profiting that much given the low sales volumes (~50 units). The profits probably pay for lemonade at one corporate lunch. If anything, the minions should be lauding Massdrop for making it available to the masses for cheaper.

AGDR has pretty much done the former (not for profit). It is a better amp, objectively and subjectively (to my ears at least), with his booster board mod in place and 2xlme49990's in the gain stage. http://www.agdraudio.com/Page2.html I'm surprised vendors haven't started offering this as an addon actually.

As far as better portability, I don't think it can really be done because you (supposedly) need at least two nine volts to supply *enough* swing to really drive high ohm phones. AGDR and the guys on diyaudio all seem to think the revamped circuits sound better with higher voltage rails +/- 15.3v instead of the original 11.8, ditching the batteries altogether. http://www.agdraudio.com/Page17.html
