Is it still possible to get the GS firmware chip? I emailed [email protected] to inquire about one, and all I got was a generic email back pointing me to the Yggdrasil upgrades page. Which does not have said chip available.

FWIW, when I opened up my Yggdrasil A2 to install my newly acquired A1 cards and GS firmware (YD218). The A2 already had a YD218 rom chip.

I ordered one in July for $35. Tell them that you want to order a firmware ROM chip to update the Yggdrasil A1 to the GS firmware.

Perhaps it’s too early to tell, but what do you think of A1/GS compared to A2?

That's almost word for word what what I asked in the email. Which is why I was surprised. I had gone digging around the forums and had seen to email Schiit to ask.

I can only comment on how each sounded cold, mind you both were already used and baked in cards. The baked in A2 sounded better first few hours than the A1/GS first few hours. It was actually quite jarring coming from the A2 that has been powered on in my systems for almost a week. The A1/GS is shouty and spitty, and it's evident it has a more neutral sound signature than the A2/OG.

The A2 was sounding pretty good the last few days except the tipped up bottom end that kind of blurred the mid bass and midrange, and was the reason I sold my Gugnir A1, although the Yggdrasil A2 did seem better behaved, it still bothered me a just a little.

It's way too early to to say anything else on the A1/GS. I've been doing a lot of reading in the various threads, and getting an idea formed from people that I know sound preferences. I thought the A1 would be worth a listen, and I got a great deal on the A2 Yggdrasil, as well as the A1 cards.

I personally have not heard the A2/OG, but I’ve had the A1 for seven years, and I don’t find it shouty or spitty. It certainly tends toward a cooler sound, which many will classify as neutrality, but I don’t hear it as shouty or spitty. It could be a matter of warm-up, even though the cards have been baked for several years. It could also be a matter of input connection. Which input are you using? My chain is MacBook Pro > JRiver > Lynx E22 > AES input on the Yggdrasil.

I'm not expecting the hot sauce up top to stick around, it's only been powered up since this afternoon. The top end of the A2 was saucy for a few days too, but overall it sounded better behaved and easier on the ears from the get go.

A2/OG isn't annoying from the get go, but takes a while to get to its best. A1/GS is annoying as f**k cold. Give it three days to three weeks depending how much the cards were used.

Yggdrasil A1 GS is my favorite schitt dac and it took me a long time to find something to replace it. Ultimately it's bad SE output and FR naggers bothered me enough to let it go and find something else without these compromises for my use case. My use case is coax digital input and SE output.

A1 GS is more neutral in tone (flatter / less downslope plus you hear some treble nasties and ' accentuated tape hiss' causing the grayground) than A2 OG. I personally find A2 OG to be on the warm downsloping FR side with improved blackness. A1GS is very forward (narrow) presentation while A2OG is more normal and actually on the dark side (higher bass shelf) when used via unison USB.

A1GS (even though it has a neutral overall tone) also has an inner warmth and midbass distortion bump similar to that on HD650 that was smoothed out in A2OG. Whatever engagement (vibrancy and macro dynamics) magic A1GS had with headphones is significantly reduced in A2OG. I equate A1GS r2r magic with some of the magic and compromises you get from certain nos dacs (phase compromises) at the expense of that small image or no stage sound. Always something screwed up in the FR with r2r dacs until you spend big bucks and even then.

I didnt find either dacs to be good with speakers particularly.

I own @Jh4db536's GS and also have A2 cards. I bounce between them. It's like a pool and jacuzzi, it's fun to switch from cool to warm.

A1GS is upfront, incisive, and sophisticated bravado. Not the blackest, not greyest. It can tire you out, and that's usually when I end up swapping to A2.

A2 takes the rough edges off and moderates everything better while maintaining some of the elements of Gungnir A1 with a little richness, but much improved detail and losing whatever implacable stupidity was always lurking in the Gungnir Multibit A1 treble. When I get bored, I go back to A1GS.

I got my A1 boards in the mail today and even cold I'm enjoying them with the Studio B and ZMF Atriums over the A2.

I never really planned on getting an Yggdrasil A2, but an absolutely insane steal was on ebay so I got one just because an Yggdrasil of some flavor has been a desire of mine for ages. I'd been leaning toward a LIM, but then that popped up. While waiting for the A1 boards I had time to play with the A2. I appreciated a lot of what it could do and it is ahead of what my Bifrost 2 OG (though it's definitely no slouch either) is capable of retrieving, but it was way too rich. Especially in the lows which would also smear into the lower mids on tracks like Ripples in the Sand from the Dune OST. I like a little syrup, but with A2 I was drowning in it. I'm definitely looking forward to more over the next day or two once the GS has a time to warm up a bit.

As a side note, if anyone else in the future needs to get the GS firmware, asking for Laura directly was the ticket. The moment I asked for her things proceeded smoothly.

GS2 is very tempting. Could @purr1n or somebody else kindly summarize the sonic strengths and weaknesses of the GS(2) version relative to LIM and MIB? I prefer a non-fatiguing sound signature (like the MJ3 amp). Thanks in advance.
