My new Romanian HD650 sound like my old Irish HD650, and are of the same quality, as far as I can tell just by looking and handling. Same cord, too.

I bought the new hd 600 a few months back. I had a fit thinking they possibly changed how they sound since they sounded so bad. There is a very harsh 5kHz peak that i could hear. It sounded very veiled in the treble. Sibilance sounded rough and grainy. Very warm fundamentals. I tried to like them for a week or two but gave up and returned them. Sennheiser needs to work on their treble in my opinion.

That was my experience a year ago too. I don't know if it was pads. The HD600 always had a slight bit of upper mid emphasis, but this was bad. Small things can make a difference.

For example, I heard a JAR HD600 last week which was the most awesomesauce ever. It was totally different from a prototype JAR HD600 that @Hands had sent me earlier in the year. @Hands showed me some comparative measurements, and the proto had a small relative bump at 3Hz and 7kHz. However, small things, if they are in sensitive spots, can make a big difference.

P.S. That new HD650 looks like crap. A few small aesthetic touches are missing thus creating disturbance in the Force.

So, at the request of someone/a company I used to collaborate with regularly, a company that has reason to be interested in checking if production changes might affect how various Sennheiser headphones sound, I actually tested some new HD650s after they moved to the Romanian factory.

I can guarantee you they sounded noticeably different (quite a bit worse) than a normal HD650. Measurements were quite different too. No doubt about it.

Sennheiser may have since ironed out whatever caused this discrepancy, but I can't be sure. Even then, there's no guarantee that you'll get a newly produced pair on purchase. Wherever you buy from, it's possible the box they pull off the shelf was made during the early stages of Romanian production. Or maybe they have good pairs and bad pairs to this date.

On the Romanian units I tested, the only visual difference I could tell was how the silver baffle material was applied. Interestingly enough, the new units had much more consistent, visible adherence between the mesh material and plastic skeleton of the baffle. You could clearly see the dark silhouette of the skeleton beneath the mesh, whereas the other HD6X0 products I had on hand were more hit and miss. Less of that skeleton visible in a consistent manner.

Now, I know for a fact that the higher density material you use for the baffle (mesh) on the Sennheisers, the more you'll get boosted bass (mostly upper-bass), but also you hit a tipping point where upper-mids become recessed if you go too dense. Similarly, less dense material means brighter highs, to the point they can become irregular and ragged. There's a balancing point where things even out. Too dense, and you often end up with a low-treble emphasis and very rolled upper-treble.

My best guess with the Romanian pairs I tested were that the greater baffle-to-enclosure adherence caused a similar effect. It could be that a more "sloppily" applied mesh has little micro channels, effectively creating a less dense baffle in a sense. Or, it could be the mesh has a slight wicking effect with the adhesive, i.e. a more tightly adhered mesh may have soaked up more adhesive, again creating a virtually more dense baffle.

Again, the reason I guess this is based on visual inspection and that I've played around with baffle densities on the HD5X0/HD6X0 products. I could be wrong, of course. It's totally possible there were other material changes that weren't visibly obvious to the human eye, nor did I pop out drivers to inspect those fully.

Either way, the "why" or "how" may not yet be known, but new, Romanian-made pairs can very well sound quite different. I can guarantee you, it has nothing to do with pads, break-in, etc. I've heard HD650s more than a decade old and fairly recent pairs, before the factory switch. What one might get with a Romanian pair can potentially be wildly different than the minor variations you might have heard in other pairs.

Now, there was one silver lining to all this...I also tested a non-HD650 Romanian-made Sennheiser. Maybe you can connect the dots, if you know to which individual and company I was referring, and figure out what the headphone is. This other, recently produced headphone, one I really did not care for previously, sounded really, really good. I can only hope they worked some new magic on that headphone and kept it that way.

Ha, I only wish the early Romanian HD650s I heard sounded as good as the HD660S.

I'll link it here again for emphasis:

    https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/solving-the-hd650-mystery.8026/

Thanks for others that pointed it out as well.

I forgot that someone took drivers from a new pair and put it in an old shell, which their testing seemed to confirm my theory about sound differences mostly coming down to the baffle.

This thread also mentioned this may only have been a temporary production issue. Maybe it was a process thing during the transition, or maybe they got a bad batch of raw materials. Can't say for sure.

Still, this goes back to what I said: This doesn't mean purchasing new will get you a more recently produced pair. It could be an Ireland-made pair, it could be brand new from Romania (possibly sounding just fine), or it could be a bad egg if there was a period of messed up production in the transition.

That said, I would still exercise some amount of caution when ordering new, but "caution" may only require vigilance in subjectively checking sound quality on receipt and exchanging as often as needed. A hassle, sure, but I wouldn't write off a Romanian-made pair inherently given this could have been only a blip in production.

@Hands I appreciate the clarification. Somehow I missed the memo (and the thread that you linked also). I guess it's time to get your old stock 650 and put it away for a rainy day. Or not...

I've got a pair from Romania and they sound like the typical HD650 when it's pre pad break in. That said at higher volumes the differences become more obvious theres something nasty going on even when I swap my pads from the Irish pair.

My Irish OG 650's have an inherently smoother, warm, lusher sound with the lovely timbre you'd come to expect.

In my opinion if you want a 650 get a used Irish pair. Parts are modular and it's unlikely the drivers will fail as they last forever. The pads would already be broken in too so sanitize em and job done.

I don't use my 650Ms that often, but I will never sell them.
    (edit: especially now)

Just checked mine purchased in Dec 2015 and they don't have this hologram on either side. Seems to me those holograms would be easy to fake since they can make pretty much make anything in China ... ahem

The link doesn't work anymore but when I got mine I used the QR code on the box to check their authenticity, so I know mine are legit. They box also says 20140120REV01 so maybe they are earlier than yours and sat around for a while.

Edit: I see that 20140120rev01 code was used even on early HD6XX so I guess it's not relevant.

Edit2: just looked up my Amazon order, it was June 2016. Feels like it's been longer than 4 years but I guess they are 2016s not 2015s.

I remember checking the code on the box on the Senn website when I got the HD650s, but couldn't find anywhere to do it when I got my HD800 (NOS) earlier this year. Guess they gave up on it.

This is all pretty alarming. Will try and grab as many older pairs of HD650's as time and funds allow. I will Horde them !

After following the discussion on Romania vs Ireland I bought a new pair HD650 myself. Build quality is premium, same as it was in the past. Everything feels rock solid. Cable is identical apart from the missing Sennheiser logo. No reason to complain about the new version.

It sounds like a HD650, too. I have a 2016 HD650 and a 2017 HD600, these sound very similar anyways. The 2020 HD650 sounds like a typical HD650, nothing wrong with it. Right now I'd even say bass is a slightly bit better than on my old pair, that's most likely due to the new pads vs my old worn ones.

No reason for panic when it comes to the HD650.

I'm pretty certain the Romania HD6XX are still the same as the Ireland. They look the same to me in various photos on Drop (from Sept 2020), plus nothing has been updated. IE: The Sennheiser headband signing is the same and the L and R are still on the outer sides.

Also, the Romania box is the same (except it has a sticker with Romania) with the code 20140120REV01, which has been on every Sennheiser 600/650/6XX box from 2014 to 2019. The new 600 & 650 boxes no longer have it.

I think I've found the easiest mod to flatten out the boominess in HD6XX. It's probably not a new mod, but I haven't see anywhere mention it. Thus I post it here. I added 2.3 grams of wool to each of the cups, and that's it.I kept a little warmth to compensate the cold in my Gungnir A2's bal out. 3 grams of wool would make it even more neutral. However, it would be tricky to pack more than 3 grams of wool into the cup. I bought a pound of organic craft wool to mod T50RP, but found out wool does almost nothing to the FR except damping the bass a little, which turns out to be crappy for T50RP, but a great match for HD6XX. I bet a lot of you tried to stuff cotton ball in the cup, but cotton aren't as acoustically transparent as wool, which will mess up FR.
Here's the before and after on the SBAF 3.2 curve. The peaks and dips above 4 kHz are unit variation of my miniDSP EARS. I gave it a quick listen and it definitely sounds more clean and neutral. I don't think it changed any other sound characteristics beside the boom. Maybe absorbing rear reflection can help distortion, but I can't do reliable distortion measurement due to city noise.

I've stuffed my HD580 with ~2.5g of cotton ball exactly as you described here, result was subtle but positive, no huge FR change. Perhaps wool is better but cotton worked well for me.

How did you arrange the wool inside the cup? Picture is worth 1k words ;)
