I don't mind class-D for sub-bass/bass use. Usually makes the speaker more receptive to better amplification for the mid-high section which can be designed to be very sensitive.

I'm not the biggest fan tbh. IMO bass is the most important part of an audio system, and benefits the most from quality amplification IME.
Of course, it has tradeoffs (much bigger cabinet, way less drivers to choose from) and I understand the convenience benefits of partially active speakers in terms of footprint, extension, crossover tricks, EQ, etc...I just prefer to have the same amplification for all the drivers, despite being more inconvenient.

That's totally okay! If I had to choose between two speakers and they'd both do the same thing, I'd always go for the passive one. Makes a lot more sense from a system complexity standpoint.

What I don't like is using DSP and other integrated system solutions to basically do the same thing as what can be easily achieved by a traditional passive setup. Or using digital trickery to allow cutting corners in loudspeaker design. I don't want to do the same old shit just on a computer, I want to do things that weren't possible with passive analog designs. My speakers have 1st order crossovers, 30deg of phase shift above 200Hz without FIR filtering. And they aren't SPL gimped like all 1st order filter designs of old.

I don't mind that as well. Class D works very well with subs, so if in that speaker case it does only that and one can still use different amps for everything above bass, that's a win IMO :)

Joseph Crowe Nighthawks. I really enjoy the curves (and quad 15s per side)

Welp, time to add one more pair of speakers to my "when I win the lottery or someone realizes my latent genius and pays me tons of money to sit around in my pajamas listening to music" list. Sorry for semi shit post, amazing looking speakers though, I'd love to hear them.

That massive front horn being held on with decking screws worries me. The vibrations could wreak havoc on that joint. I'd much rather see a threaded insert epoxied into the horn with a bolt to reduce psi at the joint.

It just makes me feel inferior. My penis is far, far too small for that monster!

Yes. And let us who will never belong to that pyjama-wealth brigade have some irreverent fun about it. That, at least, is free.

The guy is a mechanical engineer that does CAD design and simulation on all his speaker builds. I have confidence that he is using the correct mounting hardware

Speaking as a mechanical engineer, sometimes we are whizzes with the numbers and simulations, but absolute dreck when it comes to the tools

As a ph.d I can confirm that there’s plenty of us with very little practical experience with a toolbox

I mean, yeah sure I know how to work a lathe, but that doesn't stop me from somehow accidentally turning the entire machine shop into a Class II/Group F hazardous explosive zone...

(no one was hurt, but it took a good day to clean and decontaminate/flush the atmosphere)

Speaking as a structural engineer... you obviously don't know the same mechanical engineers that I usually have to deal with...:D:oops::oops:

I'd like to see something that looks better, whatever the engineering. I'm sure they cost enough...

Horn-loaded mid-drivers and ribbon plus open-baffle woofers make this one a rather interesting concept. I predict that this would integrate well even with very unfriendly rooms.

I didn't turn my sound on, as there is zero point in videos trying to represent the sound of another system. I couldn't really see the point of a video at all, until it panned back and I saw the holes in floor, and began to think about the words "floor-loaded!"

    Interesting!

Never mind whatever the level of engineering and the spurious-looking joints on these monsters, I bet it smells absolutely fantastic in that workshop!
I'm getting a glue fumes high just looking at it!
