Of the two, I would say mountain is better.

    Edit -
I wonder if @Torq could sail a piano.

    Probably.

Also, my only real experience with those was the Denafrips Aries. I liked it from a tone perspective, but I couldn't hear details the Bifrost Multibit could clearly render - a pretty big sin in my book.

I heard of their older offerings years ago, and thought it wasn't my thing.

I have no idea if I'd like one now - I'd love to borrow one for a week, but in any case they're definitely worth a good long audition, and also definitely not something to buy blind if you're not already a fan of the NOS sound.

Something to think about if you can?

I can't recommend Gungnir Multibit highly enough, although I am using it with the Jot, and have never heard Bifrost Multibit. I am sure it wouldn't last forever, but i can't imagine a better choice at less than twice the price, and don't feel the need to upgrade right now for any amount of $. It did make me think about upgrading my speaker rig though, which I can't even think of affording. C'est la vie.

While I love my Amethyst, pairing it with a Black Widow might be a little too much "relaxed on relaxed" or "smooth on smooth" crime...

edit - what DAC do you use with your speakers? The only reason I'm thinking that is maybe you could get the Gungnir Multibit, and if its too much "accuracy" to the point of fatigue, you could move it to your speaker system and enjoy all the awesome staging it provides, and demote your current DAC to headphone duties...

    I have a TEAC UD305 driving two JBL LSR308s, and a LSR310.

My home theater is a Definitive Technologies set. Driven by a Denon receiver. I barely use it. I can't even recall model numbers.

Thinking about going 3.5 mm trrs (ifi nano idsd black label) and I'm wondering if I plug in the trrs jack into a standard 1/4 inch adapter will it work or do I need a special adapter?

So your headphones don't have a balanced cable? In that case, you won't gain any benefit from a TRRS adapter. The iFi literature says that it is a single ended amp, but it can still provide some benefit for balanced headphones.
The new S-Balanced technology means headphone channel separation is unchanged with load (requires balanced wired IEMs or headphones to benefit)

I'm getting a 3.5 trrs cable and am wondering if a 1/4 inch adapter to make a 3.5mm into 1/4 inch will still work. I think that's a better phrasing of my question. Whether going from 3.5 trrs to 1/4 can be done with a generic 1/4 inch adapter.

So where are we with sub-$500 amps today outside of the Schiit lineup? Anything that can compete other than the Cavalli Massdrop amps that have limited availability?

I love my Valhalla 2/650 combo, but I want an amp that plays nicely with the 650 and AFO. I have the Vali 2 at work, and it fits the bill. I may pick up a 2nd one for home, but want to do my due diligence first.

Or, I might just snag a Magni 3 and bide my time until the Massdrop Cavalli offerings begin to show up on the used market.

I really enjoy my Magni 3 with HD650's. I've never heard a Valhalla 2, but the M3 spanked the Lyr 2 and MicroZotl 2 that I had before it in overall clarity. And I love how it has enough balls at low volume to not sound anemic, which was a problem with the MicroZotl. I also have one of the MD Cavalli amps on order, which will go into the home system with the Yggdrasil unless it sucks, and then I'll probably just buy another Magni 3.

Magni 3 in my current setup sounds better and more satisfying than prior amps such as SPL Phonitor, Lake People G109s, Asgard2, Garage 1217 Polaris (close), Magni 2 Uber, La Figaro 336C, Benchmark DAC1, Lavry DA-10, Dangerous Source, Parasound Zdac, and Micromega Myzic (urgh, barf).

Yes, a generic 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter (for single ended stereo) is compatible connecting to a 3.5 TRRS cable.

However, in your case with ifi nano iDSD black, it won't matter whether you use a 3.5mm TRRS or regular stereo 3.5mm TRS cable, because you won't have a complete balanced path going all the way to the headphone drivers.

Looking for recommendations for very efficient and affordable headphones to pair with an organ. It's an old tube based two manual church style organ. It has a headphone jack that is very wimpy. Barely any volume. So looking for very efficient headphones to use with it in order to get more volume. Currently using Brainwavz HM5 which are rated at 64 ohms and 105 dB at 1 mW. Those are working OK, but would like just a little more volume. It's only an organ with noisy tubes (there is audible hiss). Sound quality isn't the most important part. Comfort and high sensitivity are more important. I could add a small headphone amp connected to the headphone jack on the organ. But trying to avoid that. That complicates things. And this is for my mom. Need to keep it simple.

    Hmmm.

Sennheiser Momentum 2 are 18 Ohm & 111 dB/mW, if you believe the specs.

Assuming whatever is in the organ keeps the same output with lower Z, or doesn't drop too much - not a given though - they should be a fair bit louder.

So I'm enjoying my new HD650s a lot through just the default headphone outs from my PC and iPhone, though both don't have enough power and finesse (mid to high volume sounds clipped and peaky). Contrary to most, I don't feel like the HD650 is slow or veiled, and actually has some peaks in low treble.

Based on everyone's impression of the Magni 3, it seems like it's a good synergy with the HD650. So I plan to get that.

I only have a PC/iPhone as source, so does the Modi 2 suffice, or does the Uber/Multibit make more sense?

The non-uber only makes sense if you absolutely need a usb-powered dac.

Otherwise, the flexibility of the uber kills it.

The uber can be fed by an eitr, or other spdif source in the future.

The uber can be fed via optical from your motherboard if the USB is noisy, or you have a ground loop, for the price of an Amazon basics cable.

The non-uber needs a Wyrd for that.
