I totally agree. I'm a grown ass married man in my 40's and deep down I'm still just scared enough that if I take shit too far around my Mom that she'd go full old school and beat my ass, lol. When I was growing up Mom didn't play. She had these skinny little 1980's belts that hurt worse than my Dad's work belts. They were like whips. But you know what, I get why she did. I'm a parent now and I don't do the "everybody gets a participation trophy" stuff for my kids either. And so far, none of them are tools, lol. Hopefully that trend continues.

Or you grew up on the limits of poverty. After a while you understand that the world can be harsh and unforgiving no matter who you are. So what do you do?

You learn, adapt and find the limits. Then you become good at doing your thing and make sure that people understand you and vice versa. Every time you fail you learn. Every time you succeed you improve. Treat people like you want to be treated and avoid being that "asshole."

At the end of the day you make friends and chill out...

Lol some great posts. So much truth. I for one, say f**k social media. Can't stand it. I don't give a shit what you are doing, eating, buying, or going. I f'ing hate the obsession with social media, getting retweeted and liked. None of it means a f'ing thing. I also hate anonymity on the internet. People can act like the biggest f'ing assholes. My online persona is me. I'm polite, respectful, kind of quiet around strangers, but can be engaging. I normally don't start shit with people a d try to work issues out. Unless it's direct confrontation.

On the internet a good portion of the people turn into instant tough guys, with perfect judgment, who have never made a mistake in life. So many times I wish we had our true identity online. Or maybe you could have just one screen name. Eliminate a lot of asshollery.

Oh, speaking of likes and dislikes, I fell asleep a little early last night, my old man-nes is catching up to me. Anyway, I checked here and I had 17 alerts. I was thinking, uh oh, must be a lot of dislikes, what did I say??? Normally I have 3 or 4 alerts. So, I either said some dumb shit, or maybe I said something good. I was betting on the former and was preparing the newest thread about dislikes (and how I finally see how truly evil they are) in my head!!! Lol.

When I was a child we were lucky if we got dislikes for breakfast. And we got beaten if disliked them. For special treats, we went out and ate them out of paper bags. Which we had to live in afterwards... ... ...

Dislikes for breakfast are a great way to start the day. Plus, a dislike like a day, keeps a rando away. ;)

So tempted to start dumping dislikes on y'all (good-natured ones, of course).

Jokes aside, I'm in my mid-20s and like many am scared shitless of crossing my parents. I'm part of the generation that's starting to come around on that, though. You know that whole "your parents are always right and you're an ungrateful bastard if you think you know any better" type of mentality? I subscribed to that line of thinking up until just a few years ago. What changed? Not much, other than that I figured older people are human too, and that includes my parents. The fact that we're just about starting to regard one another as peers, each with areas of strength and weakness, helps.

I got my fair share of beatings when I was a little whelp. Whether or not that contributed any to my having anger and abandonment issues, which I guarantee you I have but try to keep that separate from my SBAF persona because this is a fun place for assholes to geek out over schiity (hah-hah) gear, I've no idea. Still, I'm honestly torn between schools of thought on "beatings build character" and "they're ultimately detrimental to an individual's psychological well-being". I lean towards the latter on account of a growing body of evidence, but a part of me that's likely irretrievably fucked up maintains that it cuts a long and tedious process of helping kids, who are really just adults in smaller bodies with unrefined tempers, develop their own complex system of moral ideologies.

People underestimate kids. I used to intern as a teaching assistant at a SPED school and they're far wiser than most dare believe, enough so that I sometimes wonder if kids are the smart ones and adults just corrupt their beliefs to fit in with the world around them.

I haven't had a drink in over a month and I'm way too sober to go down that rabbit hole just now.

    P.S.
Not to say I'm not candid on here, mind, just that I have leeway to look words I don't often use up to make sure I'm not misusing them, plus there's no risk of my mispronouncing anything :p

I disliked the landlubbers' use of leeway. Leeway is not desirable!

But don't worry about it. It has been the usual usage ashore since forever, and only sailors know better

I beg to differ. A good sailor knows how to use leeway in his favor.

In certain, specific circumstances, maybe, but a boat with zero leeway would be the ideal, the stuff of dreams. I'm confident that leeway has killed more people than it ever helped out.

    You mean Able Bodied Sailor.

It's the last holiday weekend of summer here in the States so if I know anything about @JK47 , I know where I would be.

    Good grief!

Nature is the greatest designer. But it has had the occasional failure!
