    Nature is nature.

Regarding Asians: I feel mainland Chinese general behavior, as experienced by outsiders, is a byproduct of overpopulation, rat race competition, and life standardization. Such an environment is not unique to mainland Chinese. Similar results may be seen in other areas of the world with similar environments.

    Regarding Guns:

Lawfully owning guns will not make one safe. A well armed undercover police officer in Mexico was targeted for immediate execution. He was driving a pick-up truck I believe. At a traffic light, on plain daylight, a shower of machine gun fire rained on him from multiple directions. They found his awesome-sauce .38 and some other random high power automatic rifles in his truck... along with his jaw on the windshield. A friend of mine who is crazy about guns, particularly Glucks, needs another gun-safe. I think it's the third time someone brakes into his house and steals his gun.

Not owning guns, owning guns, I think maters little. Guns are going to be around regardless. Regulations are IMO rules to be enforced by law-enforcement. Law-enforcement can and will be circumvented. It's defined as crime these days. Whatever sort of authority exists at any given time, nature will circumvent it. One adapts and does one's best to be happy and safe.

A piece of paper will be piece of paper. And nature will be nature.

It’s not only confined to Mexico...

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2759797/

TLDR : individuals in possession of a gun were 4.46 (P < .05) times more likely to be shot in an assault than those not in possession. Among gun assaults where the victim had at least some chance to resist, this adjusted odds ratio increased to 5.45 (P < .05).

I'm glad I owned a firearm when someone broke into my home, I made it they didn't, they were armed as well... You're either a 1 or a 0, no in between. I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I've been fortunate to have been very far away from violence. The closest would be the daughter of a family friend. Her weapons of choice were pillows and a sword. Pillows for her kids. Sword for her husband. Wasn't pretty. Real story in El Lay about 10 years ago.

I'm glad you are well @JK47, and that things worked out for you. It doesn't always work out in the long run for everyone. Depending on your specifics, some folks are encouraged to start a new life some place else. Nothing is for certain, and I hope I'm not wrong, but living in a place with low crime might help.

I feel I've been blessed so far. But I haven't always lived away from violence.

Not everyone can afford that luxury, I lived in a solid mid class neighborhood the second time, the first was where I grew up, and no chance in hell to move out of the affordable place in town... and they got dropped with zero remorse too. They came with bad intentions to my girlfriend and myself and they paid the price when they broke in.

Holy shit, I’m glad you ended up on the right side of that equation. That is truly terrifying.

I understand. In your situation I feel a gun makes sense. Again, I'm glad you are well.

It's terrifiying, my intruder wasn't armed and I didn't even have to use mine or point it at him. He just ran off as fast as he could into the woods when he saw it. I was 19 and living alone in a rural Illinois so it was even more terrifying. He left his truck behind so the police eventually caught up with him.

I'm glad you made it through alive. I grew up in Metro Detroit and when I moved out of my parents suburb and down to the city at 21 I carried a concealed pistol everywhere I went. I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I have always had nice cars being first and foremost a "car-guy" and I've had to dissuade several car-jackers over the years with my pistol. A snub nose .357 speaks a thousand words in those situations. I now live in Indianapolis and its basically a different world compared to Detroit.

There's no real argument with that. There are hypotheticals, but of the sort that could have left you dead.

There's no real argument with that either.

There's also no arguing with the fact that America has a problem. Solution yet to be found.

Cars and small islands. I remember some young guys revving their motors in a car park on Alderney (UK Channel Islands). There's not much else one can do in a place where the sea is never more than a couple of miles ahead. Hight of frustration!

Did anyone read past the first two paragraphs of that study? I found it interesting that they used the term "individuals," when what their data apparently indicated was "unemployed individuals with criminal records that lived in the bad part of Philly." At least they had the decency to admit that this study only really applied to Philadelphia, although they buried that down at the bottom.

Given the topic of this post, I just love that one of the main roads is named "Mercedes Ave"...

@mscott58 LOL, it's not as premium as you might think, honestly. The place is full of pretty bad restaurants, has more crumbling infrastructure per square meter than Roma, and is filthy as hell, though you can say the latter applies to many places in NCR. Also, I remember there were a crud ton of shops along Mercedes Ave where my dad used to buy bootlegged (I know, I know) PS1 games for me back when I was a kid. Swung by on my own a few years later during the latter PS2 era, the bootleggers were still there and business was booming. Tried to pass their wares off as "original" CDs because I don't look very Filipino despite my (lack of) height, ergo, a rube ripe for the picking.

    *sigh* Fun times.

EDIT: You pointing that out made me crave sweets, dammit. Not sure about the etymology of Mercedes in the Spanish/Filipino colonial context (Spanish surname perhaps?), but all I associate with the name are that street, the auto manufacturer, and this:

Singapore may be a developed nation but the mentality of the people especially the younger generation is no better than your typical mainlanders.
