Seems a fair price in today's market and he's open to negotiating it seems. I'd check if they've been serviced recently, but you're really paying for the enclosures for those speakers and they look very well cared for.

Edit: Didn't realize that was in CAD. Around $1,500 usd is a steal. Especially if you can talk him down even more.

Those look like they're in good shape. A lot of those old LaScalas got beat to hell. Price is very fair. These can be modded to be pretty special for not a ton of money.

if you’re interested and have the space, you’re not going to find much better if a deal than that. You can buy turnkey crossovers from Crites if it needs some work there. I don’t remember off the top of my head, but some La Scala crossovers are thought to sound better than others.

Only downside is if/when you want to sell them, it might be a hassle.

Never been serviced. All original parts.

What types of mods are typical?

Space is the real kicker. Getting something like these would necessitate getting a shorter credenza thingy for the living room, and/or wall mount the tv, which necessitates building the feature wall first, which snowballs into the next set of renos that we've been holding off on... y'all know how that goes.

I suppose the big boxy stuff is always a hard sell.

Xover mods are typical. If you get on the Klipsch forums you can build a Xover from almost any era with modern parts or contact Crites to do it for you. Some guys experiment with different drivers. I think titanium tweeter diaphragms for the tweeters might be an option as well. Those really helped a pair of Fortes I rebuilt a few years back.

So the seller has now offered $1500 CAD for a local pickup... Ugh I literally can't fit these in the living room and I'd need some kind of integrated amp with optical or hdmi-arc input and either wifi/bluetooth, but the price is so tempting...

Wow...that's like a price you could find 15 years ago. You almost have to do it!

They look identical to the pair I owned. They are from the mid 70s, not the 80s. They have the AA crossover and alnico drivers. The 80s would've brought a AL crossover and ceramic drivers.

I would NOT modify them. The crites stuff loses a lot of magic over stock configuration. They also sound great in mono or stacked on top of each other in stereo (the top unit would be flipped). I played around with all that stuff when I had a pair.

The price is very fair considering the condition! I sold my very beat up 1976 pair for $2,000 CAD.

You can use them as a TV stand....I know of people that have used them for close distance listening and loved them. DO IT!

    I hate you guys

I am currently doing mental gymnastics wondering if I can apply a nice veneer to them and resell...

That's a config I haven't thought of. I'd need to measure as that might still not fit in my space.

Behold my mspaint skills representing my living room. Red is the TV and credenza thingy. Green is the couch. Blue is a piano. North of the piano is a fireplace. South of the living room is open to the kitchen. If I were to try and stack the speakers as @k4rstar mentioned, I maaaaybe can fit it next to the tv. Hmm now I dunno... Hearing things off centre really bugs me. Neither side is particularly great. Speakers in the middle of the room would be better, but then tv gets smooshed to the wall. Speakers in corner isn't terrible... shoulda kept my eyes out for some Cornwalls lol.

@crazychile 's suggestion to use them as a TV stand isn't bad...

You guys have worn down my inhibition mini boss... but the final boss still must approve these big things...

How big is the room? Maybe La Scala need a bit of space? If they’re not the right speakers for the room, then they’re not really a bargain, and you might have trouble moving them on, as few do have the space.

I see vintage La Scala come up fairly often, for this reason I’d guess, and also they’re surprisingly bass light.

Not to dissuade you. I bet they’re plenty cool, and I’d love to own a pair myself, in the right room. If you’re asking yourself where they’d go, could be they’re just not the right speaker right now.

But I wouldn’t despair of never seeing another nice pair, bc IME they do come up now and then.

    @wbass

    updated mspaint
    dimensions in feet
    upload_2024-9-3_21-7-40.png

I currently only have about 14-16 inches on each side of the TV/credenza. The inset is also 14 inches deep. Overall room is about 16 feet wide, and approx 36 feet down to the kitchen. The east side is all wall/windows. The west side opens to the living room corridors, the top opening is significantly larger and also opens to a high ceiling living room.

That's why I was kinda joking I need a Cornwall, as those speakers from my understanding are meant to go in the corner (hence corner+wall ??)
