I don't like the tuning much, the upper mid suck-out in particular is strange. They do very strange things to strings in orchestral music. I don't mind that they're a bit warm, oddly, but the suck-out bothers me.

Also, they're sort of.. fake resolving, if that makes sense. They have brilliant attack, but seem to miss a lot of the other detail (@Mikoss explains a bit better here).

    No problem.

Enjoy your headphones and the music.

I actually loved the LCD-3s and Xs when I heard them but am shit scared of having to RMA an Audeze headphone to the US because of driver failure. Sennheiser stuff seems unbreakable.

On the other hand, LCD-3 has overall better bass than HD650s. There is lots they have in common too, mostly the smooth and easy to listen tuning.

I'm not sure I agree. The bass is a bit stereotypically planar, too- fast but not that fat. Just because it's loud doesn't mean it's better. The HD650's bass is a bit bloomy, but it sounds really decent and nicely-textured out of the Jot, which is what the person who asked the question owns.

It's not horrible bass, but even if it were better, it doesn't solve the funny timbre and the upper mid issues at all; it's pretty irrelevant to them.

I don't hate hate planars at all, but out of a Jot? I could listen to the 650 balanced all day, but his LCD-3 would probably not last nearly as long, even if they weren't so uncomfortable.

I am really enjoying the shitpost thread compared to the not shitpost thread. I think this is where the cool kids hang out.

I think I know what you mean, sometimes I hear things on my $50 speakers that wasn't quite as present on the LCDs and makes me wonder.

This is also one of my fears, I already think the sub bass on the 3F is on the lesser side, coming from an LCD2.2 prefazor and bassier things before that.

edit: not to say the LCD-3F is bass light by any means, but it's just much more present with more volume (probably true for most planars) so low level listening isn't as impactful vs say a given dynamic. They're still great headphones.

I hope MassDrop goes the K7XX route with different color options later on down the road.

Yeah, it's an odd problem. There's stuff that I can hear on the 650s that you just won't hear on the LCD-3. Stuff where high-ish strings vanish is often the worst aspect, though that's not specific to the LCD series, a lot of headphones do that- that's down to the tuning.. but the lack of detail thing is a bit of a pain.

This is the first time I've heard LCD-bass called "not horrible". :) If they have one thing going for them, it's bass. I guess I'm a big fan of lower bass freq's and not so much mid-bass warmth and bloom. That's a major reason my HD650 got replaced by LCD-2.1s.

Anyhoo, for 200 bucks HD6XX is a no-brainer (for you folks in the US). Why not check them out.

Will there be one at the SBAF meet? That's the real question...

Well, if you're happy, that's the important thing. I can't wear anything Audeze for more than a few minutes without wanting to fit the designer with a scold's bridle, due to the discomfort.

The bass is indeed not horrible, and the slight warmth in the tuning should be right up my street, but alas, I didn't get on with the LCD series. I feel like the most obvious upgrade from the 650 right now would be the Utopia, and I don't want to spend that much. LCD 3 as mentioned by the guy above (posting from my phone so I can't check his name) feels like an expensive sidegrade at best. It's a shame, as if they had scratched an itch, I could have had a tidy used pair for a fair price.

The thing is, HD650 can often sound underwhelming- they need a beefy amp to drive them, and it looks increasingly like they also need modifying to sound their best and most revealing with a lot of amps. A lot of people have probably never heard them at their best. However, when you do, you can take price totally out of the equation- it's not just a case of "sounding better than the LCD 3 for the price".

    Edit:

Also, screw all you guys, for reminding me why I love the 650- I do need a second pair to modify for other non-Jot amps now.

We should have one at the meet. Let me ask Christian. Lots of stuff going on today for prep.

Was here to close this thread since the official thread is out. But I guess I'll keep it open for shits and giggles.

I wonder if this is a stepping stone to a more tweaked headphone down the line. This establishes a relationship with Senn and shows them how great Massdrop can be as a sales platform with a low cost, low risk product. Once Senn is in and happy, then Will and Christian can say "Oh hey, about that HD700..."

They definitely will. Such a great price for what I think in my limited time is amazing.

Since the useful life of this thread has long expired, what would people actually want from a "HD7XX"? Between the treble peakiness and midrange suckout, I think any sound improvements in those areas would make the sound unrecognizable from the HD700, at which point it begs the question of why bother investing in the R&D to create a headphone with the HD650 sound (as an example) in an HD700 housing that nobody will buy over the HD6XX. There aren't any well established HD700 mods out there, which might suggest that there isn't enough community interest in the HD700 over other products in Sennheiser's lineup and/or the HD700 is just unsalvageable. There is a bit of a value gap between the HD650 and HD800-tier cans in the current headphone market, but I'm not sure this is the right approach to bridge the gap.

What is the current favorite inexpensive balanced cable for these?
