Plenty of people on here that can recommend solid options for any budget, small to just plain ol' stupid. IME sticking around HF for budget stuff is more likely to send you down the path of budget, low-fi purgatory before you realize you spent enough money over the years on random crap that could have instead had a fraction of that spent on something decent to start and the rest saved up for a nicer rig down the road (or anything else, really).

I know what you mean. Although trying different stuff is kind of fun as long as it is still within my budget.

The only reason I visit HF is for the classifieds. That's it. No other reason.

I find that I like to check the front page, to see what gear to avoid.

The knowledge level and depth of information on SBAF is significantly higher than on Head-Fi. In addition, it is difficult to get accurate information on Head-Fi because post-decision dissonance is prevalent in that community. Head-Fi users immediately post positive reviews of newly purchased equipment as a way to get validation from other members about a significant purchase where perhaps they did not make the best choice. Data does not lie and the measurements and graphs posted throughout SBAF are extremely valuable-- the Super DuPont Resonator is an example of the great information that only exists on SBAF.

^My thoughts exactly. People have to justify their spending somehow, and HF is a perfect place to go to find others that will piggyback on your opinion to justify their own.

I still go there solely because it's more active. I really feel the "board culture" vibe from here, people can swear just because they are frustrated or joking and although sometimes information are passed in a way that is kinda hurtful, it's actually much more useful than having a super politically correct way of describing how something is bad or good. I actually got an informative reply the moment I first posted here where as in HF, gotta wade through the muck and wait for someone who actually cares to reply or else someone cynical or a snob pass through just to jeer at me.

Where's the dislike button on headfi when you need it?

Found this golden nugget on the 650 thread (http://www.head-fi.org/t/197776/sennheiser-hd650-impressions-thread/33345#post_12455993)

Heh it's always fun to witness thread cleaning... John Franks goes paranoid in DAVE thread about Schiit's dubious marketing efforts to pollute the thread with Yggdrasil? Even Romaz's decend afterthougts are gone. And what was the talk about Rob Watts dissing Yggdrasil too in some deleted post..

I guess Schiit's stance about not talking of other manufacturers is wise, stuff like that just embarasses..

iFi did the same thing, posted some shit taking aim at the Yggdrasil. When confronted with @atomicbob and his measurements of the Yggdrasil, they sanitized the thread of people talking about the measurement and silently edited their post to no longer attack someone over their "mythical" 120dB noise floor. I put iFi on my personal black list after that. If you're going to talk shit about people and get called on it, do the right thing and apologize and amend your statement.

Ahahaha. That plastic spider doesn't do shit. It's barely held on there and doesn't even make real contact with the magnet. Just holds the foam in place, which the vast majority that have tested subjectively have found to be a positive change.

Speaking of objectivity, I've found possible hints of subtle improvements from all these mods. Cleaner CSDs, smoother response, tighter and faster impulse response, etc.

Let's not forget these genius engineers also cranked out the HD700. :)

I have very fond memories of Headfi and am sad to see it in its current state. I joined up rather late in the game in 2009, but it was still full of older, respected, and respectful members that I learned so much from. Granted there was less gear to choose from back then since the high-end headphone industry was still nascent compared to now, but man I miss those simpler times. Headfi, and even headphones as an industry has become like that wonderful hole-in-the-wall bar that only a few people knew about making it onto Yelp or some blogger's top 10 places and has now gone to shit, full of sheeple wanting to be hip, but with no real knowledge or appreciation for what the bar used to be and why it was special in the first place. Glad I found this little hole in the wall.

Heh from that the outside we probably look like sheeple as well, but at least we are sheeple with better gear, cleaner desks and slightly fatter wallets that don't spill open with every new miracle product, and not just thanks to our false shepard.

Sadly, we can't have Talking Heads* become popular AND have CBGB not become a clothing shop. Hopefully our focus and intent is different enough from Head-fi that we never face such a choice.

*Yeah, I know, Blondie, the Ramones, the Misfits, etc. ad naus.

I skimmed through that post. What exactly is the "AM&R Mod" mod? Some acoustic fiber and Dynamat? It's not clear at all what it is.

Look, all you need to know is:
"Renowned Head-Fi'er @Stillhart also tried this modded HP 100. He is a former owner of the stock version, and he was quite impressed as well."

    I'm sold.

Ha, I tried the HP100 (another one of those Head-Fi mistakes). Awful. Tried a bit of internal damping. Still awful. Got rid of it.

A lot of idiots kept talking about how neutral it measured based on this: http://www.headfonia.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/IMG_2958-Copy.jpg

Who knows, though...maybe it actually sounds good with thorough modding and different pads. Just every time I hear "HP100," I laugh. To be fair, while that guy doesn't delve into what the mods are (he might not know), at least he did seem to acknowledge the stock HP100 wasn't that good.
