Does anyone know of any headphones that would be appropriate for an 8 years old that doesn’t sound horrible?
Not looking for audiophile quality just something under $60 that doesn’t sound like you are listening through a tin can.
Some of the cheap ones I’ve heard could put a kid off music for life.

KSC 75. Maybe Porta-Pro if he can handle the headband and the thin cord.

Sometime last year and with the best intentions I purchased 3 Porta-Pro's for my my wife and two daughters. They have yet to let me live it down. "These look horrible!", etc. I am pretty sure my wife thinks I intentionally insulted her, and she ended up requisitioning the Focal Elegia's I had. My two daughters ended up with a Sennheiser gaming model, can't recall which one but they were $120 or so each. Maybe things would have been different with boys?

Just a reminder that style over substance rules the day outside of narrow and geeky audiophiledom

I stole my father's PortaPro when I was around 8 years old, they sparked an obsession.

I bought some cheap-ass Mpow headphones for my kids a couple years ago (they were 2 and 4 at the time). I wasn't going for anything fancy as I figured they'd get broken or lost anyway. They are cheap, reasonably well built, and had built-in volume limiting, which I think is important for younger kids. I'm not 100% sure how they sound, since they don't really fit over my head. In my very brief listen, wearing them like Jordie Laforge's eyepiece, they didn't sound like ass. And they're still working, almost two years later.

Ety kids. Used purple heart or CAL. Used thinksound on2.

Where and when is the listening happening? My daughter uses the HD58X and others as well.

Recommend the CAL! as well. Tyl recommended the Sennheiser Urbanite for kids.

CAL (Creative Aurvana Live) are currently on sale at Amazon for $49. Senn Urbanite is somewhat above the $60 budget, but it's certainly a sturdy and comfortable set.

If light weight and portability are more important than damage resistance but Koss Porta Pros are not to style tastes, consider the Koss KPH-30i ($30). I don't think they sound quite as good as the Portas or KSC-75s, but they're the same sort of things (same drivers).

Not sure how great they are but JBL has some volume limited BT headphones for kids on sale for $40:

Honestly I'd prioritize preserving your children's hearing over getting them the best SQ at this point. Get them into the habit of listening at a reasonable volume young so they don't have hearing loss in their 20s.

I'll strongly second that. Kids will just crank it up simply because louder is better, what do they know? For my daughter I looked into simple headphones that had a volume limiter I could switch on and I tested it on myself before I let her use them. There's a number of different option out there, think mine were around $20 from amazon. She's happy with iPad speaker sound quality so she's happy with them.

My daughter had the JBLs which were great. They crapped out after 18 months or so - the BT transciever. I've not found something better though, so ordering another pair.

I've had a pair of Puro headphones for my daughter for a couple of years (she's 6 now). After a lot of research, I chose them for the good build quality, volume limiting features, and detachable 3.5mm cable. They've been really greatL durable, BT is solid, and battery life is accurate. Daughter finds them very comy too. Passive noise isolation is sneaky good too. Helps that I like the sound sig quote a bit too(crisp, warmish-neutral tuning.. reminds me of a Senn 598). The Puro line I have appears discontinued now, but if they did mess with the formula, I'm sensing their current line is definitely worth a look.

Probably should just let the kid pick the headphones. They wont know how good or bad they are and they'll most likely be happier getting what they wanted.

I wouldn't let my daughter use Bluetooth headphones for health reasons. Doesn't look like the research has been done on how Bluetooth specifically can affect child brain development, but there's been enough done on cell phone radiation for me to want to keep all that stuff away until they are much, much older.

Looks like Amazon has a bunch of wired Disney princess headphones with volume limiters. :headbang:

For wired headphones with the laptop/tv etc. I use a 6" extender that I stick to a surface with blu-tack so when they walk away with the headphones on they just break free instead of dragging the device with them.

My 8 year old used sound limited headphones (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7WADJK)for a while, then adopted my HD58X because the kids phones sound terrible.

I manually check that he's not listening too loud (he doesn't use headphones often)- if he can't hear me speak, he is listening too loud.
