I have done plasma donation off/on for the last 3 years. In my area if you're consistent (2hrs/wk) you can pull in about $3500 a year tax free. That bought me most of my gear.
Radiolab had an excellent podcast about the USA and how we sell so much of our blood to other countries.
I have donated to the Red Cross maybe 2 dozen times myself, whole blood and about a pint each time. My hope is that it goes towards a good cause and not for just profit but I have no idea after I donate.
The American companies can be trusted nowadays to screen the blood for diseases. In contrast, Haitian Minister of the Interior and National Defense "Lucky" Cambronne got rich selling tons of infected blood in the very early 70s.
