The crazy thing is literally 1 song in and I'm like "yeeeeeep, that's HD600!!!" Love it or hate it there's a clarity and resolve in the upper mids so few headphones do, I kinda forgot how much I loved these headphones...
Probably an unpopular opinion but I actually like the 600 more than 650, just that the one I have available to keep borrowing is a 650. Mottled countertop finish FTW!
I remember being a broke grad student selling HD600 to buy HD650 with great trepidation. I mean, that f'ing senn veil-smiley horse beatdown was everywhere on head-fi... i had a right to be afraid of going to the dark side.
I will admit going to the HD650 after the HP-3 is tremendously relaxing, which is why I'm on the fence about which of the two to get when I scrounge up enough cash for it (and the JAR mod looks cool!), but there's something about the HD600 that I just like more. Haven't done a triple blind A/B to determine why yet :P
Also, hah, I actually only found out the actual meaning behind what I thought was a general purpose "beating a dead horse" emoji thanks to Tyll's excellent write up on the 580/600/650, which I read... just last year? Lol. Never noticed the headphones on it.
OK guys my HD650’s were made of a dead house! Um......I mean I concur with what have said. I’ve had the 650 so long I really don’t know when I got them. I think I got them because of Stereophille. Then a friend gave me the HD-600’s. The 650’s don’t get much use. Guess I like neutral.
For comfort, I think Audio Technica is hard to beat. The ones with wings. I yanked the cable several times, just getting up from the desk and walking, forgetting I was wearing headphones at all.
Oddly enough for me the DT880s remain among the most comfortable headphones ever, barring the clunky and occasionally noisy adjustment mechanism— their pads are remarkably plush even though my ears touch the grilles a bit. Not a fan of AT wings, but at the same time I've not had the pleasure of taking any home for extended use. Not a fan of leather pads because though they do conform, I live in a humid climate and...
Digging this up for fun: as an experiment I left HD600 + Magni 2U out at the ranch house. Wonder how long relatives notice a pair of "fancy" headphones and a cheap amp sitting on the shelf - my hope being someone puts them on for shits and giggles, and is rewarded with a late night of, "just one more song". Uncle Jon, I'm looking at you...
