I'm actually rocking a mid-tier phone nowadays. Flagship in the lineup didn't come with a headphone jack so that was out of the question. Bragging rights aside (plus, well, camera tech usually), the drive to pick up a flagship just isn't as compelling as it used to be for me.
On a budget get the Samsung A-series. If you have more money get the S8 or S9. I have the 2016 A5, still a good smartphone with sufficient RAM and a smooth runner.
Well any Android sold does end up "supporting Bill Gates". Nokia (or rather HMD) has been using near stock Android with quick updates and reasonable pricing.
I actually plan on getting a Nokia as my next phone (I'm due for an upgrade later this year maybe), or the Huawei P20 (that camera!). Prices for both do seem reasonable against flagships, may be worth checking out?
Prices have gotten crazy and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. If you wait a few months after a phone launch there are deals to be had. OP is announcing the 6 May 16 which should be really good as long as a camera isnt your primary need.
I have a One plus 5T. Very impressive screen and speed, no silly vendor bloatware. Camera is definitely 'meh', okay for casual viewing but if you zoom on a monitor you can see the processing is lacking- images turn to watercolors.
For the money and other performance, I am okay with the crappy camera.
I bought my wife a Moto G5 Plus late last year for $200 and the thing runs just as well as the flagships. Camera isn't as good but is still on par with 3-4 year old flagships. Honestly I have no idea why anyone plays the $1k phone game anymore. Talk about diminishing returns...
Essential has issues with its radios and signal. Overlooking a camera is one thing, having a phone that doesn't work, drops calls and signal is a completely different matter. I may look at essential when they come out with whatever is next but I would skip this current iteration, unless the radio issues have been resolved.
Mr Mobile brought it up in his review of the phone and Ive seen it mentioned a few other times. It could have been fixed I haven't looked at phones since I got my Note 8. I am interested in the OP6, but I would like a good camera, Kids, so I will be waiting to see if its new or the same as what was in the 5T.
