The way I see it digital is more immune to minutiae than analogue is (hi @Thad E Ginathom), so while I'm very much a value USB cables guy I can see why people'd shell out on nicer belts and whatnot.
Vinyl is not a game for the value-oriented it seems.
Everything's a thing for those that make it one! Which sounds like Shakespeare. Shakespeare writing on audio?
I didn't, personally, want to deal with that kind of stuff on a turntable: I just wanted to listen to music. But, there are engineering/mechanical aspects that are basic common sense compared to digital nervosa...
...like, eg, what happens if the belt sticks momentarily as it lets go of the platter (or pulley). Wow or flutter, I'd guess. Could you hear it? That I won't try to guess! But rubber is likely to stick. But then, how to get the non-sticky thread not to slip? See? My head is hurting already.
@Thad E Ginathom The nylon string stayed more level on the turntable than the rubber did. What really blows my mind is Marv mentioned using dental floss!
It's thin string. Maybe some of it is waxed, but if not... probably what he happened to have around. Maybe thicker than button thread, but thinner than washing line!
