Hmm, I've just bought whatever Kindle is cheapest. Just the regular e-ink one, without adds. They often go on sale, too, especially on Prime Day.

That said, I sort of hate giving Amazon a cut of every book I buy. I think Kobo lets you buy through indie bookshops.

@wbass Nice, yea same here. I don't use Amazon prime anymore so maybe Kindle not best for me. I also have a few hundred epub books from when I had a ereader a long time ago.

Hmm, yeah, Kindle does seem like a bit of a closed system for that. I like cheap, so I can throw it in a coat pocket and not worry about it.

What are you using for? We do have an e-ink/e-reader thread here on SBAF and I am an expert in that field.

You can load epubs onto a Kindle using Calibre. If you get one on sale, hard to beat the Paperwhite for normal use.

@YMO I prefer books, but I travel a lot and carrying around 3 books while jet setting the world has become a bit silly. So I was hoping it to be something slim in my carry on but also easy on the eyes.

    Any screen size preference?

@YMO I think it would be nice to have a large screen so it's easier to read from lap / waist distance. But happy to take your recommendation on what's the most ergonomic screen size for reading.

I wasn't expecting to go this route, but for fiction reading, my wife and I have ditched our Kindles for our iPhones. The modern OLED screens have great sharpness and contrast with easy reading at very low light levels. We naturally moved over to the iPhones with the 12/13 pro models.

If you want an actual Kindle, PM me and we can work something out for the cost of shipping.

I've had a Kobo Libra H2O for a couple years and like it better than my very old kindle that it replaced. It's not fancy or color or hirez but it's great for reading books. And you can read any ebook/text format without having to hack, does a pretty good job with pdfs too.

I had a Kobo for a month till the screen “froze”. I contacted them and was told that it’s not covered under warranty. I had another Kobo before that for years and worked fine, but the reply on the recent one totally ticked me off. I ended up buying a Boox.

I like the Pocketbook readers. Good software supporting a wealth of book formats, including the special DRM used by libraries in Germany, PDF reflow/cutting off margins etc etc. I’m not sure if they are offered in the US at all, though.

Kindle and Kobo are really your options. I have used others but they tend to be running Android which isn't great if you're planning on mostly using it for actual reading. The Kindle Scribe had some great firmware updates and I use mine for note taking constantly now.
