I also realize that things will differ a bit given that infrastructure here does not take heavy rains, winds, and other hurricane conditions into consideration.

Not sure how comparable typhoons are to hurricanes, but potable water, powerbanks, and nonperishables are essential (hello, powdered milk). Have a first aid kit handy, and nutritional supplements just in case. Betadine and hydrogen peroxide, and a fair lot of durable plastic bags to keep things from getting soaked. Silica gel maybe for foodstuffs. Best of luck to y'all.

Having gone through Katrina + others:

    - keep gas tank full, park it somewhere safe (beware trees falling and flooding)
    - have plenty of cash on hand
    - protect windows from flying debris
    - prepare to be without power for days: cook food in fridge beforehand, load up on canned food, get a battery radio if cell towers are knocked out, charge all devices and download tv/movie/music content onto them

Not sure how likely but if the water supply gets knocked out, store a large amount of water for bathing and flushing toilet, and - most importantly - load up on drinking water.

One of the worst things after Katrina was the lack of drinking water in sweltering heat without fans/ac (if people didn't have generators). Folks got dehydrated and desperate very quickly.

Plan an escape route ahead of time. Keep a list of contacts in a sealed baggy along with IDs/passports and other important docs ready to grab and go. A charged battery bank and cables. Flashlight/torch. Put what you need in a grab bag with energy bar and water. And stock up on water at home. Prioritize what’s important to you: e.g. family/pets>memories items>audio gear.

@joch reminded me with the memories thing: back up what data you need to (e.g. irreplaceable family photos, social security stuff, really important work documents) to the cloud as able. For heavy stuff you're fond of but can't really lug around with you in a hurry, make sure they're tucked in a secure and watertight space before the storm lands.

We usually fill up our bathtub with water, and any other bottles and buckets we can find. Plan for power to be out for days, especially If you have a lot of above ground power lines and poorly maintained tree lines. Have food you can eat uncooked, or prepare with a camping stove. Don't rely on refrigeration. Don't forget pets - have supplies, water and a plan prepared for them, too!

Have a plan in case of flooding. Check your FEMA map, but, Houston had poor drainage and got wrecked by floods on moderate rainfall, so plan ahead. Do not go to your attic if it gets real bad! That killed a lot of folks in Ft. Myers. If you're at all uncomfortable, or if the storm gets worse, just leave. We know what hurricanes do in Florida, but, one in California could be a wildcard with landslides, flooding, etc.

Having also gone through Superstorm Sandy, and being out of power for 3-4 weeks; obtain a generator ahead of time if possible and stock on fuel to run it. It may or may not apply to you, but after stocking on fuel, water, non-perishable food and a means to cook and heat said food water (e.g. camping stove and equipment), having a generator comes in really handy if you can get one.

Virgins, @penguins the Autist lives in LA. It is going to be a shitshow regardless. He keep saying to me on private video calls nude that he doesn’t wanna be a Florida Man. Well guess what! He will have to turn into one!

Sounds like I have the basics covered then.

@gsanger - Didn't know about the attic - I'll keep that in mind.

Don't think FEMA or whatever alphabet agency has a hurricane plan in place for southern CA though. Like how Lousiana probably doesn't have anything in place for earthquakes or wildfires.

Seeing the roads here after heavy rains though (10+ years ago) - I suspect most people won't be able to go anywhere once the weather gets bad.
