DACs are counted by chassis. Buying LIM and adding A2 and MILF boards counts as one DAC. Amp+DAC combo units count as 1 amp and 1 DAC. Soundcards and iPhones don't count as DACs, dedicated outboard units only.
wish I hadn't gone thru this exercise... too many... 8 of each, one of each was an AIO (that I never used the amp section on, but playing by the rules... also counted as an amp)
Hmm, if we only go by gear I personally spent money on, 9 amps and 5 DACs. It should be less really, but I spent some time and money mucking around trying to make a "secondary" system. This never worked; the secondary system never was used. Loaner gear also helped curb a lot of the gear cycling.
Since entering this hobby: 9 DACs of which I've sold 3. 14 headphone amps +1 incomplete kit. No real regrets. I still dig most of what I bought or built.
Amps: (16) Hifiman EF2a, EF5, Lyr 1, Lyr 2, Lyr 3, BH Crack (x15 or so builds for folks in various modded forms), Vali 1, Vali 2+, Magni 3, Piety, BH Mainline, SW51+, DNA Stratus V2, DNA Sonnet 2, DNA Stratus V3, Pietus
Yikes! 34 amps (not counting CMOY and O2 duplicate builds), 21 DACS (quite a few AIO (got caught in the LHLabs/donglemania whirlwind...)). This is what being in lo-mid-fi purgatory since 2009 looks like. I have lost $1000s over the years in the swirl.
reading all those that came after my post... I feel much better about my 8 each now. I thought I was meandering around the sidestreets to get to where I am now, but it looks like I must have been on the autobahn. Wow that's a lot of gear cycling going on... lol
At the beginning, most things just weren't good for the price I could pay. Then I got a huge DIY bug. Then I was obsessed with AIO. Then I had no idea what the endgame was for me, so I went back and forth between small and medium sized stacks. Interestingly, I never truly got away from the HD650 and HD800 outside of the ZMF VC through it all.
Honestly, after the first few posts this morning, y’all were making me feel like a gear slut. I’ve had at least 25 amps and 12 dacs (that I can remember) over several years.
I'm waiting for the hidden SBAF Zenmaster to come out of the shadows and say "1 of each. My satisfaction was immediate and lasting, and I knew there could be no more, so bought nothing else." Cue gong as they bow and disappear for another 1000 years.
I've been in the headphone/amp hobby for almost 20 years. I started with a Headroom Total Bithead and a DT880 and slowly worked my way up to TOTL over time. I have found a measure of satisfice with my current gear, but I know I would not have achieved this without the journey through mid-fi and endless tweaking.
In other words, the reason I'm satisfied with the Phonitor X and Kenzie Ovation for ZMF headphones is because this gear synergizes and best meets my weirdsies regarding audio.
