Also not impressed with the growing number of AI generated garbage at the top of their pages.

I noticed around covid, or just before, that Google's search was significantly less insightful than just a few years before. They also started to very obviously scrub political/moral controversy, not sure if they announced this or just did it behind the scenes

Guess something has to give when they take in $250B+ from their search engine. IMO peak google search was ~2005-2013 when search was "only" a few billion in revenue.

Now days I'm also more concerned with what crenca said - scrubbing controversy and things the corporate and state level investors or silicon valley crowd may not agree with. OTOH less random and undesired "AHHH CLOSE IT DOWN" moments.

Say I wanna buy a new dishwasher. Most searches now take me to an AI generated "review" with a dozen affiliate links so that's not really reliable. I try youtube, but it's kinda half the same, and the other half is clickbait titles/thumbnails with minimum 20 minutes of runtime for the algorithm... sigh.

TBH I don't think we can blame google directly for this. Sure affiliate links via whatever channels incentivize the above behaviors, but Google does not directly create the crappy content. i.e. Someone can still do affiliate links but just have better content.

Indirect censorship bugs me more as that is something that is ultimately 100% determined by Google. i.e. no monetization for stuff they don't agree with.

If its a dishwasher you want, then look no further than Bosch. We have only been dissapointed that the button labels wore off, otherwise, it has worked without issue for years (knock on wood)

@Ksorota Thanks for that! We're moving into the new house in a couple weeks and the kitchen will need to be reno'd at some point, including all new appliances.

@Armaegis - product evaluations are definitely suspect on both. For recipes though YouTube is superior. On Google I usually end up on a food blogger page or a major publication with a ton of ads and slows down my computer. On YouTube it’s someone filming their grandmother cooking and the recipe is pretty authentic

@Gazny If your friend is still looking for people for a Kagi family plan I will join. Kagi is legit.
