@Case Honestly I'm much less attuned to western comics than I am to Japanese manga and such (I know, I know) but there are lots of standalone films that jusst work even if you only have a vague idea of the characters like Justice League: WAR, JL: Dark, Batman: Year One and Batman: Gotham Knight. The Flashpoint Paradox adaptation is good too.
Mind it won't be GREAT cinema, but I at least like em more than MCU.
@Case Random bits that I think are good for folk new to anime: ERASED, Trigun (the 90s one, haven't seen Netflix adaptation), Monster, Kino's Journey. Just stuff off the top of my head, there are much better ones I just can't recall right now, I am certain. Jojo's Bizzare Adventure is a whole cultural movement. Random stuff like Nichijou or Arakawa Under the Bridge could work for weird humour.
attack on titan has its moments. but it depends on what you're looking for genre wise tbh. My favorite anime ever is still Fate/Zero, which I do think is good even for newcomers as its lighter on tropes and is more serious, its something I could envision being on HBO if they carried anime. otherwise do you want action? mechs? slice of life/coming of age stuff? etc
I saw this latest remake of Dune on Netflix recently and after reading the reviews here when it came out I decided to wait until it was "free" on stream. Thanks to SBAF, my expectations were kept at appropriate level! I think I will stick with what is working and wait until Dune2 is on Netflix to catch it ;)
I have slightly higher hopes for Dune pt 2 because that half of the book is where most of the stuff actually happens and it looks like it will be less focused solely on Paul.
