I swapped out the opa1678 for opa1656, sounds good but why loader now, and some high frequency sound funny at times when music is near clipping. I trying to reverse engineer the circuit best I could I need post the schematic.

Most solder already has flux in it. It's the brown stuff that shows up and produces smoke.

I thought the same thing. And for point to point, no big need. The first time I tried flux with SMD was life changing.

I appreciate everyone who came up with/wrote impressions about this mod! On headphones I already found a good impovement in my Modi MB. Bass sounds so much cleaner, there is an increased sense of layering/depth and while it is a lot more neutral, I like that it still has an overall warm touch even with the 1656.

I'm curious what my 2 channel system ends up sounding like..

I found the mod is a substantial upgrade to the Modi MB. It's more neutral and more incisive yet maintains some of its original warmth. Comparing to the BF2 OG, while BF2's bass is more powerful, it feels like it has a very slight but noticeable haze in comparison to the upgraded Modi. With the Nitsch and the Elex, I preferred the MMM.

Is it possible to mod the BF2 OG? Has anyone tried it?

100% incorrect. Magni 3+ is a discrete amp.

You show the DC servo. The servo op-amp doesn't matter at all, it has a 2-pole filter at 0.16Hz. You could literally replace it with a TL082, which is what we use for most servos. Replacing it with many op-amps won't make for a good day, as it must have very high input impedance, extremely low input current, and fairly low noise.

If you want to try different op-amps in output stages, multiplying DAC references, etc, that's fine (as long as you know the ramifications of what you're doing, and know there's no warranty). But a servo? Nah. I played with that. The servo op-amp, as long as it isn't complete garbage, or unsuitable for its purpose, doesn't really change things.

I recently did this mod a few days ago with x2 OPA1656, and was amazing at how much more detail there was but i wanted something a bit more textured/less flat, so i replaced them with x2 OPA2156 and the difference was huge, it gave me all the extra elegant detail/texture i was hoping for and more, while preserving all that lush sound. For my chain this was a complete upgrade with no downsides. I have a second Modi Multibit which is stock that i compared side by side and after doing this mod, i cannot go back to the non modded unit as its just too bloated and lacking detail, i will install x2 OPA2156 in that one also. Huge thanks to everyone that posted their findings here otherwise i would have never known about this.

May I ask where you are sourcing the OPA2156 opamps? I'm having a schiity time finding them.

I suppose I am not positive on that. In many cases the following letters refer to the way the are shipped/packaged for distribution...maybe someone else might be able to shed more light @Azimuth ?

@YEEEEGZ the numbers after the 2156 matter.
    • OPA2156ID & OPA2156IDR = SOIC
    • OPA2156IDGKT & OPA2156IDGKR = VSSOP
SOIC is what you want. VSSOP is like half the size of a SOIC. The OPA1656 is not offered in a VSSOP package.

TIL this^. I too thought the suffix letters referred only to packaging.

TI datasheets show the pin pitches on SOIC-8 chips (IDR) vs VSSOP-8 chips (DGKR): 1.27mm vs 0.65mm, respectively.

Ok, awesome. Thank you for the help! I saw there were some China sellers on Ebay, I may do that.

I'd worry about fakes from random sellers, myself.

Yes, unfortunately that could be my reality… I’ll bite the bullet though and report back.

Yes, the SOIC, VSSOP, HSOIC, SSOP, TSSOP, etc. are the Package Family. The DGK or ID is the actual package. And then the letter after it is either T for Tape and R for Reel. For ordering one, it does not really matter Tape or Reel, it may just be a preference. Tape is like a tube, like a long straw all the IC's fit in. Reel is kind of like a movie film reel with them packaged individually.

For SOIC, they use ID family, but really it is just D. But that is the tape or reel is ID or IDR.

I spend too much free time looking at IC datasheets.
