I’m sending this to @purr1n for a blast from the past sort of comparison. A great DIY DAC from over a decade ago vs the great commercial offerings today. Afterward if there’s interest you can sign up for a loaner.

You can ship however you like. Insured for uhhhh $201.30 exactly.

Open to friends or contributors only.

You can borrow it for as long as you want/need. I‘m not using it right now anyways.

post your general location so I can organize shipping if my brain is capable of that.

and pls post in the thread when you receive and when you ship.

impressions required in the thread Purr1n creates.

Sign me up! Got nothing but 20+ year old DACs at home anyway, plus a Modi 2 Uber that's destined to be gifted to a friend in the near future. That's about it.

I would like to hear one again. Put me at the end of the list, because I tend to get too busy or plain forget to test and ship gear. Or, if that's not acceptable, just don't put me on the list. :)

Nah that’s the spirit of this loaner. Take your time. 2 weeks wouldn’t bother me.

I found my old MisterX gamma2 in a box last week and plugged it in for the first time in years. I forgot I even had this thing.

It was the first DAC/amp I bought as part of this never-ending hobby so I have some irrational fondness for it and think it still sounds pretty darn good. I'm entertaining finding a HD600 or HD6XX to try it with.

I tried to use it with my notebook and it wouldn't power on. I realized that if you're using the USB interface, it won't turn on if it's plugged into a receptacle. Once I unplugged the power adapter it worked and powered through the computer USB-A port.

What's the best way to feed this badboy ? Wish I still had eitr. If you guys think feeding it via coax with oppo,103 is worth it I might check it out it there's other east coast interest.

I used coax but I don’t know which Input sounds best with the gamma 2. At the time USB was more problematic than it is now so I always assumed coax.

    East coast is fine

Iirc coax was a little better than SPDIF but I couldn't tell much difference. The USB implementation is meh but unfortunately most notebooks don't come with hybrid optical/3.5mm ports anymore.

If I was still in the USA I would have loved listening to this one. Especially compared to a Modi 1/2/3 with similar features and form factor.

If you pay shipping both ways you can borrow it for as long as you want. But not sure the cost of that is worth it.

I’ll just add you to the list because I do t care about East Coast, it’s not like shipping there costs more and this isn’t a high value item.

I appreciate it but I don't think I will have much time as we grind towards the holidays. probably have to pull out of the Borealis loaner also.

I would like to subject this to my standard measurement suite if possible, toward the end of the tour.
