The chips Schiit uses are hybrid R2R / resistor string DACs. The resistor string being used for the four - five MSBs, the remainder of the bits is R2R. Resistor strings are kind of like a primitive brute force version of R2R with guaranteed monotonicity (property of never decreasing values as the codewords increase - DACs of other types may have inherent inaccuracies because of resistor value variance), but the downside is you need a exponentially increasing number of parts for more bits.

    oops...

    Read the Bifrost Multibit FAQ:

    What’s this about a non-oversampling (NOS) mode?
For 176.4kHz and 192kHz input sample rates, Bifrost Multibit passes the music right along—no digital filter, no oversampling. Have fun! Upsample lower-rate music with another algorithm, and compare to our “comboburrito” filter.

Im baffled on how you can fit a multibit dac on that board.

If schiit can fit the Bifrost Multibit into the modi, they can fit a single ended Gungnir Multibit inside the Bifrost Multibit.

That does not logically follow, I'm afraid.

Oh Jason, don't try to put us on: we know the REAL reason Gungnir Multibit is out of stock is because you figured out how to put two Yggdrasil's in it.

    It's official.

"Modi Multibit" as Mike said on the HF thread.

Hmm... I thought Schiit took care of the glitches...

The really awesome thing about this DAC is that it becomes cheap enough to buy multiple units to use with a minidsp nanodigi. Before, implementing R2R DACs in a digital crossover would have been enormously expensive. Now it still isn't cheap but it's doable.

One thing that goes unnoticed is that the THD for both is at max output. However the output of the MM is at 2V and for the M2U it's 1.5V. If the samples were adjusted to give the same output then i would not be surprised if the THD for the MM was as good or even better then the M2U.

Would need to find something that would split a DTS signal into multiple SPDIF streams

I would bet him $100 that they were smart enough to try the unit with the Vali and check if the volume control is scratchy. Of course, they didn't have his technical expertise to consult.
And the only way to tell if the multibit sounds good is to listen. Many have enjoyed it, hence the excitement. Cheap DS is rarely decent unless you're Larry Ho, Sabre whisperer.
His post is basically saying hey guys, this might not sound good. Yeah. We know. People are excited because of the track record of the company and all of their recent products using this technology.

Well some are born color blind, some with 20/20 eagle vision, some are tone deaf while some have 20khz hearing. If they can't hear difference between good multibit dac and good sigma delta dac then so be it. Good for them.

See, I told you someone was going to bitch about multibit and toss around distortion as their go-to reason why this would be an inferior DAC.

Edit: Could also see someone arguing that multibit tonal density is all due to the relatively higher distortion.
