Yes, this changstar thing needs to continue.

    Anyone remember this headphone?

On a more serious note: The Ether C FR looks very good. That slight 9kHz peak reminds me of how I hear the UERM. I should really give them a listen if I manage to find them somewhere here in Germany.

Interesting how much more Tyll liked the closed verses open Ether. Has the "open" Ether changed? Is it better now?

I thought 1.1 was just additional front damping? Even then, I suppose that can make a big difference.

You can make it an announcement that I eat crow and thought the 1.1 was much improved. I listened for two songs and only stopped because I had work to do rather than because I was tired of them. 1/10 headphones today I will listen to an entire song on, let alone two.

Wow, @Tyll Hertsens review was a big surprise and my interest is definitely piqued for the Ether C now (though I haven't been much of a fan of the modded/1.1 Ether Opens vs. my HD800S).

I think I might hold out for the Ether C Purpleheart 1.3S version though.

So how close is the 1.1 to the flavor of the original alpha dog? I gather it is an overall improvement, but the references, by some, to slight thinness, elevated upper-mids and being just a tad light in deep bass and bass impact, are giving me flashbacks to why I eventually unloaded my alphas. I spent so much time fiddling with Dan's "doggy treats" after he released them to try and find that elusive sweet spot where I would stop listening to the headphones and revel in the music instead, but I just couldn't get there. At least with the alphas, my ultimate conclusion was that the front of the driver flitering improved the FR curve but also muddied the bass and further impeded the impact I was missing. Would I be in for more of the same with the Ether C's?

despite @Tyll Hertsens review which I totally respect, am still reserving judgement on Ether-C 1.1 being "good" much less great,
until my ears hear the 1.1 version, likely at RMAF 2016 or a SBAF Loaner program?

at last Oct RMAF, I listened to every Ether-C 1.0 on the tables (schiit, cavalli, etc) and told Hands to do the same- we both said "yuck" and "phone booth stifled sound" almost simultaneously.

if 1.1 is THAT much improved, will eat crow with @zerodeefex but only if it's smothered in green curry or Cholula hot sauce.

(note: refraining from any statements of Ether or Ether-C being "worth" the price tag.)

It is hard to believe that a piece of foam could make that kind of difference.

Wasn't this the opposite case for the HD800 where the earlier runs didn't suffer from the peak as much?

I'm pretty sure that was disproven in an old changstar analysis regarding hd800 variability.

A lot of the "variability" with the HD800s turned out to be the pads. Thinner, flatter (older) pads have less of the peak which is why people thought that the older ones sounded better (compare Tyll's measurements for the 5XX S/N one vs the 15XXX S/N).

There was a little change in the mesh too wasn't there? We've already seen Sennheiser do quiet updates to the HD6x0 here and there (5xx series too where they made the plastic more rigid supposedly)

I might actually sign up for this loaner, sounds like these would be interesting.
