I'm curious about whether this is simply an add-on component to a chain, a necessary one, or something that can replace/has the capabilities of a necessary component, but maybe does something that said component has never done before.

Schitt has had a few fancy add-on devices, but it seems like most of their groundbreaking things are just new innovations for otherwise standard devices. Their devices do things that you don't expect them to be able to do, such as an OTL that drives low-impedance, high-sensitivity transducers effectively, or a SE circlotron. That or they bring you functionality and sonic capabilities that surpass the usual price point for such things. I was thinking a Schiit original topology or some unheard of DAC implementation/analog section. Something like that wouldn't surprise me as much as something more in the class of gizmos (the Sys and the Wyrd.) Those always come off as side-projects that happen to be viable.

Other times, I think of what Schiit hasn't done. Transports come to mind...

Please tell me they're venturing back into vinyl. I know it's the opposite of digital, but that doesn't mean it can't be related!

Damn it few weeks ago I would have been excited about this, but I recently put together my Raspberry Pi 3 + HifiBerry Digi+ streamer running Roon and I love it.
Note sure if I would be happy or sad if it indeed was a Schiit streamer :)

Well if they can put an streamer/transport inside a Yggdrasil and make it replace the USB and/or s/pdif module that would be next level. Because i2s direct from Streamer to DAC.

2 channel products are confirmed so I think a dedicated speaker amp (buy two for monoblock!) is a shoe in given Jason's background.

IMO the traditional 2 channel market is ripe for disruption Schiit "value for money" style.

I can understand not wanting to get into source world for the most part, and consumer software development, roll-out and upkeep is incredibly complex and difficult even for major consumer software companies, much less hardware companies. But if part of the mission is to bring great sound to reasonable price points, and a big part of the product line is digital, then eliminating so much crap digital hardware and correcting hardware (and expensive power supplies for each!) between server/computer and the DAC would be a welcome achievement in that goal. We don't need an interface or GUI. Just a basic bridge.

Haha, so happy my Modi 2 Uber is still in the 15 day return window! Now I just hope it's not going to make me spend too much extra $$$.

I'm still not 100% convinced that this is real (I was sure the new product was going to be 2-channel) but if it is, I can't wait to see what impact this has on the DAC market. If Schiit can sell Modibit for ~$200 they'd be entering a strange price range (above entry level but below serious stuff) and sales might end up depending on marketing - which Schiit is fantastic at, but they'd still have to figure out how to sell multibit to the masses.

I also wonder if a multibit Modi would cannibalise sales of Bifrost 4490...

Yeah I still don't get the strategy. Modi was a nice jumping off point to Bifrost and then multibit, opening the door for more $$$ from a consumer who wanted moarrr. So now, someone buys a Modibit which is surely going to be cheaper than a Bifrost/Ube/4490. Why go from multibit Modi to plain Bifrost. Unless this is to entice people on the multibit sound cheaply so they are compelled to jump right to Bifrost Multibit. That kind of makes sense. But still some fuzzy logic I'm trying to sort out. Its not my company though and I'm sure they've thought this through countless times.

My guess behind their strategy is to release products that sound great. I bet this sounds great.
