Guys, I've been playing with ALSA configuration today and I had a realization.

There is no consumer grade hardware mixer in existence. For example, when you have two sound sources on your computer, one or both is resampled into your default output sample rate and bit depth. Alsa, and Windows (I presume) offer the ability to offload that mixing and subsequent re-sampling to a hardware device, so that the PC outputs each stream in it's native sampling rate and bitdepth instead of combining them.

Is this the new Schiit product? It would seem to tick all the boxes (being still digital but not a DAC).

    What do you think?

Interesting idea. Jason has said that for him 'Manhattan Project' would come second only to transducers in terms of determining sound quality. I just don't see a hardware mixer having that much influence.

I'm casting my vote towards a new Mike Moffat consumer grade ADC. The only thing I can think of that would come second to transducers would be the masters...

Edit: just read the hints, not an ADC :(. I feel like every time Schiit teases a new product they bring us a little closer to the peaceful vision of the future from the Bill & Ted movies.

I would be all over a Schiit high-end hardware equalizer. Not sure I believe it will happen though.

A hardware equalizer would be quite something, but it doesn't seem like a groundbreaking development worthy of being called the "Manhattan Project".

I just hope it doesn't backfire on them. Making something that has never been done before, and carving out literally a new category for it is a pretty large order to fill, especially now that it's hyped up. Though that is what Mike did with standalone DACs, so I have some confidence.

I agree. Whatever it is, it will probably be something unexpected - although no matter what Schiit ends up developing/releasing, I would still LOVE to see a Schiit Hardware Equalizer.

Yep, I play around with the idea from time to time...but it's really high complexity/cost to do it right.

thanks for the reply - seems like a lot of members in this thread are interested in a Hardware EQ from Schiit - however from a business standpoint, as you have pointed out, it has to make sense as far as cost/demand/complexity etc. - I know I would buy one -but you need more than one customer to make it a worthwhile development :p

Not sure about the "HOT" but I have to question their claim of a cloth that "...can improve the sound and picture of your CDs, SACDs, DVDs and BluRays' in a big way." And if you read the reviews, "customers" are saying stuff like that cloth improves soundstage, more spaces between instruments, more focus etc. etc.) o_O

I cannot say for sure, and I admit I have never used it so I cannot say the claims are untrue, but those seem like pretty unlikely claims for a cloth IMO. If it really does all of that, then that would be pretty incredible, but like I said, I never used it - just seems a bit far-fetched that a cloth can do all of that for your sound.

Thank you for that. I missed this entirely.

Jason's clarification posts knocked out all of my guesses. Normally when a company says something is "the first of its kind" I take it with a fistful of salt but I don't think Jason would say that, or specifically knock out all of those possibilities, if he didn't mean it. Very, very curious.

A impedance matcher that goes between the amp and transducer isn't something radically new. Plus, that's analog rather than digital.
