How about affordable, transformer couple external AES outputter in a small box?

A gadget for sympathetically aging and adding layers of esoteric tone-enhancing lacquers to DACs and amps?

I actually think this is close - I think it is a DSP that sits in between the computer (or whatever digital source) and the DAC, and it does... something... to the bits before sending them on to the DAC.

I don't know. There's still a general unease regarding DSP in the community. It would be a risky proposition.

I doubt that is actually useful but the board does look more populated if it is otherwise thought to be a Modi.

    I see:

    Left to right on top:
    -three LEDs like Modi
    -1/4 headphone out

    Left to right on bottom:
    -L/R RCA jacks
    -Coax out
    -probable toslink out
    -USB out
    -AC in
    -power switch

So yeah, sure looks like Modi.

A little hard to tell from the photos but that looks pretty much just like a Modi 4490... Am I missing anything?
(On the other hand, I doubt they'd blatantly reveal a new product like that. Or would they?)

Look at how many more caps there are on the right side of the blown up photo.

This very forum had a then-unknown Vali2 as an easter egg in a headphone shootout photo (forget exactly which one or would link), and no one noticed

Yeah it's actually a classic Schiit maneuver. I think it was in a picture Marv posted reviewing some other product.

And maybe they are just fooling around, waiting for some great ideas to show up in this “guess what it is” thread :)

I don't know what all that means. It could just be a beefier power supply. Or it could be a bunch of extra stuff to deal with a multibit chip. Guess we'll find out

Not sure a multibit Modi would make any sense. The entire point of the R2R chipset is advanced sound. It would be like creating a tricked out minivan. At what point does a Bifrost become cannibalized?

The entire point of the modi is for an introduction into entry level DAC sound. Right? Schiit knows its business better than I do, I'm just trying to work out the reasoning in my head. DACs are already very subtle in terms of differences, so why add yet another micro level of improvement in an introductory product?
