As a recent purchaser of a used Gen 2 Gungnir Multibit, it seems Schiit shit holds its value pretty well. Seems to me that valid pricing for a very good condition Yggdrasil or Gungnir Multibit is retail price, minus $100 to $150, minus the cost of upgrades to get to current version. Shipping is an unfortunate sacrifice. The value proposition is only really there if you aren't going to upgrade, which is why people are pricing higher than the formula above. If you plan to upgrade to the current version, buying used probably isn't a good idea unless you get a kick-ass deal.

Lots of people are perfectly happy with gen2 or analog 1. Hell, just look at the boards here about how much love the Gen2/Ana1 Yggdrasil got through the years.

To upgrade Yggdrasil to current spec from Gen 3/Analog 1...

Let's be generous to the seller and assume we're all from California.
    • Shipping: $37.54+ each way
    • CA Tax: $54.25
    • Upgrades: $700
    • Yggdrasil CA tax adjustment: ($185.92)
    • Also good for the seller, we're basing this price on the current Yggdrasil price, which is $100 more than they paid new.
That makes the value of a used Yggdrasil (Gen 3, Analog 1), at the absolute impractical most for someone in California who eats that big Yggdrasil tax for a new unit: $1755.59

    Now let's talk value modifiers...
    • Warranty: 2 years instead of 5 years after the upgrades. That's a 10-20% hit to value for me.
    • Condition: Unless it's absolutely mint with literally zero signs of use, that's a 5-10% adjustment.
    • Impatience: Wait for the upgrades and lose access to your new DAC for a period of time, that's at least another 5%.
Let's say all of those drawbacks are at their minimum value hit, so 20% off the impractical used price.
    • Max Value (California) @ 80% of New price assuming CA tax: $1404.472
    • Max Value (Outside California) @ 80% of New price with no tax: $1299.136
I would be listing a Yggdrasil Gen 3 Analog 1 unit at $1750 and would accept any offer over $1575+ immediately, then any offer over $1400 after a week, then any offer over $1300 after 2+ weeks.

In other words, it's not a great time to be selling a used Yggdrasil.

huh, my math is less work, ( .75 x (new+shipping) ) - cost to upgrade, got me to roughly 1200, which is like the max id pay.

I cant blame people for trying to get as much as they can for their stuff, I would to, but what blows my mind is that people pay it. If im not saving at least 30% ill just buy new

This is a really interesting discussion about used prices on Yggdrasil. I really appreciate the detailed input from @Luckbad
If I had a late-model Yggdrasil, I would just get it updated. Even now I’m contemplating how to sell Gungnir Multibit and other things to get a new Yggdrasil.

I've actually thought about selling my Gungnir Multibit soon and re-buying one when it's inevitably updated since I would probably come out ahead that way but I don't really want to be without it.

    Good math.

    Here's an alternative view.

    June 1, 2017: I want a Yggdrasil, but I can't afford one.
    I save
Dec 22, 2017. I have saved $1800, but no one is selling at $1800
    Jan 22 2018: I can now probably get a Yggdrasil for $1800.

Same Yggdrasil as I was gonna get one month ago.
Sure, if I were to upgrade it, $1800 is too much. But isn't a older Yggdrasil still "better" than a new Gungnir?

The calculus for the decision is more complicated than just assuming the buyer will upgrade. That's all I'm saying. If it were as simple as that, existing Yggdrasil owners would be mighty pissed off that Schiit just shit on the value of their Yggdrasil. While the value is lower now, I don't think a $550 upgrade option makes all existing Yggys worth $550-$700 less.

And while I recently made some boneheaded remarks on linguistics, which I know nothing about, I do have a degrees in business and economics, so I feel a little confident that I know a little about this! Note, I'm just saying I have a little education in this area. This area is broad enough that any opinion is an informed opinion and is just as valuable. No special knowledge needed here, like, say, historical linguistics :)

OR wait 2-3 months and buy a used (newer) Yggdrasil (with all the upgrades) for the same price or maybe $1900. The used market dictates the prices, if people are willing to pay $1800 for an old used Yggdrasil then great for the sellers. I think the point of this major derail (sorry @SoupRKnowva ) is that we (people looking to score a cheap old Yggdrasil we can upgrade) aren't willing to buy at the current prices and think that everybody will be like us and not buy. So in 2-3 months when newer used Yggdrasil's hit the market, the price of non-updated ones will take a dive. We just want the price decrease now.

Dont apologize, having the most interesting thread on SBAF for the day be in the for sale section has given me some laughs :p

I could see that sort of calculus getting the price from like 1200 up to maybe 1400, but not all the way to 1800...I think as @Gaspasser said, have a little patience and this will all shake out a bit

I only heard back from two of the four i messaged, both declined my offers :/

I sent a couple of polite PMs noting interest and asking about flexibility of price and never got replies. @SoupRKnowva have you been looking at the RME ADI2-DAC thread?
That looks like a fun DAC to play around with all the features and is DS.

Shouldn't really be an issue. Its the same transformer, voltage is determined by how some traces are soldered. Schitt should have no problem reconfiguring this.

    Edit:

You are based in Europe though. Unless you give a major discount or free shipping it's likely not worth it.
