I found the HD600 to mediocre performers in every regard. From a technical performance standpoint clearly mid-fi; they sound how $300 headphones ought to sound.

The one unforgivable downfall to the HD600 was how boring they are. They failed to activate the pleasure centers of my brain which ultimately led to me not wanting to reach for them or feel like listening to my favorite music. Once I realized that I got rid of them and am now much happier with other headphones.

I'm not going to bother going through your old posts, but I'm getting a very strong sense of deja vu here. Didn't you post the exact same thing, virtually word for word, before you disappeared the first time? Why are you bothering to post in a thread about a headphone you clearly dislike saying things that you've already said? What exactly is that gaining you?

If Marv wasn't such a benevolent dictator, I would have guessed that this guy was merely a ploy to boost forum activity. This guy's nickname should be "Mr. Noise" because he is throwing the S/N ratio off a cliff.

Crap, he's back to posting to other threads again. Can't we just keep him posting on here for our own amusement?

LOL! Well, actually a contrarian point of view is not unexpected, nor unwelcome. Even if it's the user forgot to plug in the cable to the source and found the cans boring. It happens.

Fundamentally, I will have to go ahead and disagree with your assessment. I can see how you may find the 6x0 series "boring" in that it doesn't have a messed up in-your-face FR. The 600's aren't overly bright, and while the 650's are warm, it's not as if they are basshead cans.

Where you really fail to assess the headphones is in the technical department. Both are solid performers in this regard; I would say that the 600's are more neutral in their presentation, maintaining a nicely even response. The 650's are warmer, however I would say their technical performance exceeds the 600's.

Either way, both cans hit a very nice technical spot, while also allowing for a more natural presentation than say the LCD's, which may be more "fun/exciting". As for these being midfi... There are far worse places you could go for $300 with drivers.

@GUTB, most folks here can understand if you found the HD600s boring. It seems from your history that you like the Abyss, and the HE-6. Both these headphones do well in the bass area. Which is indeed a weakness with the HD600s. I consider the Abyss and the HE-6s exiting cans. The Abyss more so.

However, those two cans don't have the balance and the resolution that the HD600s provide. To me the HE-6s are a little too bright. The Abyss is like an expensive babe with a glorious ass, but with less awesome tits and a sailor's face. You will need a pillow, and depending, mouthwash. YMMV or whatever.

The HD600s in some regards remain IMO unmatched in balance. They play well with many sources and scale wonderfully.

EDIT: BTW, moved this to it's own thread.

EDIT: Move this back to the HD600 thread.

EDIT: Moved to the GUTB speshul thread.

Its true that while I've owned the HD600 I wasn't using the finest source chain in the world -- Modi 2 and a home theatre amp. But using the same source chain, directly comparing the HD600 with the TH900 was virtually night-and-day quality comparison. Where the TH900 displayed incredible attack speed, superior resolution, dark backgrounds and a leap in micro-detail -- not to mention the superior bass -- the HD600's failings in those areas didn't seem to be just a matter of source chain but rather the fundimental limitation of mid-fi vs hi-fi.

But now that I have a greatly upgraded source chain with a Joutheim in the way it may be time to revisit these headphones. The great thing about Amazon is risk-free auditioning.

So what do you guys think? HD600 or 650?none of the new HD line products?
