I've had it forever there. It's a reference to my penchant to wear gaudy Hawaiian shirts...and probably that half naked ad I did.

I agree. The cost of really good sound has probably gone down adjusted for inflation. You articulated what I was thinking better than I did. What bothers me I guess is this "chasing the dragon" mentality that started with speaker based gear and then infected the headphone side of hi-fi. The higher the price of something the better it must sound mentality that has infected consumers and reviewers a like is my biggest gripe. I guess buyer beware is still the standard business model.

Indeed, now that @Tyll Hertsens has totally derailed the thread (yay), we need to have the story on that bloody brilliant picture please!

Oh dear gawd I got a PRIVATE message from JUDE him self!!

In short on the 10'th I made linked to a measurement here, and one of the admins removed it... and told me that links here aren't allowed. An Jude will be posting measurements when he can... I wasn't happy with that answer. I like to listen first, then have objective data to refer back to. I like to share said data in my reviews, but apparently all I can link or add to a HF post is what Jude has uploaded! Why does he decide what measurements are available, I suppose I could link to other sites or to my Blog but then any one reading anything I post on HF is going to be playing hopscotch, running through links which is asinine.

I truly hope to see a collaboration thread between @Tyll Hertsens and Jude, something akin to what Tyll mentioned on HF... not if Jude will want THAT as public

    Okay:

There was a time many years back when Stereophile started to be sprinkled with ads of half naked women. A controversy in "Letters to the Editor" resulted and went on for months. Charges of sexism ensured; one manufacturer even placed and ad that had a naked man in it to show they weren't sexist. I ended up feeling it was ridiculous, so I ridiculed it.

I wrote an ad that said something like:

"Maybe I just sucked in too much solder smoke over time, but I've never seen the relationship between sexy models and audio gear. But hey, who am i to buck the trend. I'm a sexy beast, eh? Anyway, if you're not into my glorious form, please give us a call, buy something, and then tell us to stop with the stupid naked ads. we'll get the message."

The original pic is a bit different and not quite so risqué.

A very good buddy did the photos, so we also did a virtually x-rated version. (If mods need to link this go right ahead.)

Shortly thereafter naked ads in Stereophile disappeared.

Note the consistency of pose. Yeah, I've got "it", baby!

Well the mod that I refereed to quote'd me, they didn't deny the existence of the measurement rig. But couldn't disclose future plans with me, which is asinine... who builds a Yard stick without the intention of using it to measure something? Like it's a BIG secret, seriously... if I can't link people to measurements here then I EXPECT head fi to provide an alternative. I've looking at Frequency Response graphs as a... point of reference to wade through the ocean of subjective bs since I got started with audio reproduction. An they've done nothing but help me, having BOTH subjective impressions and objective data has been a HUGE help in preventing me from buying products that I don't like!

Of course now a days, I'd prefer a Square Wave read out and CSD plot over just a Frequency response graph, but my point was clear. Jude needs to either include others or exclude him self... he can't disservice his community by being the only data point. Headroom is gone, we use to link to their measurements ALL THE TIME, and that's not the case any more.

I'm sure I'll wind up restricted or banned at HF soon enough... which sucks. I like the Loaner programs there, really the fun of getting to review is why I stick around. But I'm sure I'll figure something out if they drop the hammer down on me

I remember the controversy. The ad I seem to remember most was from a tube company.

This type of goldy locks measurement is the bane of my existence whenever I am EQing or otherwise modding a pair of headpohnes, because I think I hit the jackpot. Only to be smacked in the face by reality when I slightly shift it on the measurement rig to reveal the ugly truth.

    Wow... what a shitstorm!!!
    (yeah, I'm late, as usual...)

I'm intrigued to find out how Tyll's Z1R measures on Jude's system and vice versa! I don't think it will likely invalidate any results, but we'll see what the differences from both systems (and users) are and we might be able to correlate future measurements from both systems a bit better (assuming Jude will actually release a database with his measurements...)

Still, measurements don't mask what we hear... not sure how Jude wasn't affected by the Z1Rs peaks, maybe his headphone is indeed different but I surely hear some harshness on mine! That, of course, doesn't make me dislike the cans plus I like big bass and I cannot lie! :) But after reading others impressions, I thought that the consensus was the same, big bass, peaky, etc. So again, not sure what happened there...

Thank you. This simple statement is so fundamental that it cannot be repeated often enough or emphasized strong enough.
The only motivation for an audio engineering ignorant like me to read your excellent reviews, or spend hours on Marvey's DAC Chart of Awesomeness etc.., is to learn and find the best possible vehicle for music reproduction that would fit the genre I like, and my listening preferences: details, instrument separation, sound stage. And as long as the reviewers and headphone makers keep the accurate audio reproduction in mind, we are OK. Otherwise a headphone becomes a hardware implementation of some weird EQ graph.
