Olympics could be organized outside of nation-state framework? Have each kind of competition - sprinting, figure skating, whatever - be like open tournaments, as with golf or tennis. Make it be about individual glory. People can still get behind competitors from their countries. Might cut down on the totalitarian, great power rivalry bs? Admittedly, this doesn't work well for team events. Or $$$

It all comes down to context. The greater the stage, the deeper the fall. Then the question lingers "can he/she/the team recover and ...?"
