It makes me feel so much more connected to the car and gives you so much more control for example the auto transmission changing gears in the middle of a curve.
Looking at the 2022 Miata trim level options, it does not have automatic as an option until you buy their top trim. They still understand that a manual transmission is embedded into the heart of the experience of driving this car.
Decades ago, someone said that driving a car is the ultimate marriage of man and machine. You've gotta be changing gears manually to have that full experience!
I do like my button shift option for better control in poor weather, but I don’t miss full manual - I’d always end up riding the clutch and tearing it up. That got expensive.
It used to be manuals were faster than autos too. That is no longer the case. F1 switched to manumatics back in the 90s. Almost all my cars have been manual, but new autos with manual modes like the ZF 8HP in my current car are really good, and let me channel my inner Lewis Hamilton.
Okay, i'm gonna sound crazy town, but I'm planning on taking my '17 GTI and put it in storage during the winter months and am transitioning into a new Tacoma for DD activities. I'm not looking to make bank selling the thing in 20 years, but i can only imagine the '17 GTI experience will be something long gone in 10 years.
I've come to realize that we're living in peak gas burning (and turba!!) technical prowess and I'd like to save my little special snapshot in time for car enthusiasts without putting unnecessary wear on the interior and paint if I don't need to. I love this car.
We let the battery run down on a yacht (30-something foot). Attempts were made to hand-crank the diesel. A lot of skin was lost and no RPMs were gained. Thankfully we managed by borrowing a battery from another crew.
