Oh man. Minidisc. It honestly felt like the pinnacle of portable for a brief moment. The devices felt so nice and sleek compared to cassette or portable CD. MP3 p[layers felt like trash in comparison.
A couple friends and I have been switching from sharing mix tapes on cassette to using minidisc. If you're into mix tapes at all I recommend giving MD a try. Gear is pretty cheap, and quality is excellent by comparison.
After the horrors of cassette, Minidisc was just wonderful. This was my first experience of digital recording. For the first time, I could could record, and play back something that sounded like the experience. For the first time, I could copy without loss. I had the portable; I had the deck for the hifi.
20ish yrs ago Minidisc was my choice for concealed concert recording device. I even built some small microphones from Panasonic capsules that worked pretty well. I occasionally get the itch to buy a MD home deck with more digital inputs/outputs to enjoy the recordings again.
Nothing wrong with recording them for backup/archiving. The stupid bit was digging out the ancient Mac and a monitor that it could connect to so I could stay in the digital domain. It would have been far simpler to use my normal audio interface and just recorded the line level output.
@scblock - For some reason a simple SPDIF -> USB input is really hard to find. I have a 2012 Mac mini that still has optical input thankfully. I did find this little doodad that I plan on buying even if I never use it.
