I'm assuming it's resultant artifacts from D/A conversion, but what are its characteristics?

Imagine the audio equivalents of color noise and jpg compression artifacts. To me, that's what digititus is.

Glary, smeary, and peaky highs with some grain. Basically cymbals sound brash and synthetic.

Yup. To me it is easy to understand digititis by comparing two sources. Listen with PI2AES, and then USB straight out of a Pi4. One has harsher, shouty and grainy highs, and one...doesn't.

Another way to understand is to compare two files of the same song. One in the lowest damn quality mp3 you can find, and the other lossless. The high-frequency garbage should be pretty evident.

Thanks for the responses. Trying to get my head around Marv's charts in the Modi MB2 thread, with a Modi MB purchased in 2018 and OG BF2 as my references

Digititus to me is more of a quality; highs are nasty because they sound "fake." Think saccharine versus real sugar. Most delta-sigma DACs I've heard seem to exhibit this to some extent; even the good ones.

Granted, R2R DACs have their own issues (even though I prefer them)

I am nowhere near as particular as many here, but there is one symptom of extreme digititis that still get to me, even through the hearing loss... The music has no life. My foot does not tap. I want to get to the end and turn off, rather than lining up the next thing.

A very extreme example of this. Quite a few years ago, I was listening to some digital-streamed radio, and it was very low bit-rate. Comedy. I could hear the words --- but it wasn't funny!

@Thad E Ginathom I was diagnosed with moderate hearing loss recently. It also comes with tinnitus. I've noticed my tinnitus can be aggravated by what I listen to. In hindsight, I think the digititus others have described here is what causes that. I need a little boost in the upper mids to restore what my hearing isn't giving me, but too much, or incohesive tone, and my ears ring and I'm done listening.

@Pescatore ... It takes some practice to get the hang of EQ. Easy availability on the computer screen fools us into thinking that these tools are easy, but they are not. One can completely ruin the sound.

Remember this maxim: it may be better to reduce other ranges than to boost one.

There may well be a relationship between your tinnitus and digititis. Perhaps anything that irritates might trigger it?

I don't have tinnitus experience, just the hearing loss. Do take special care of your ears now: it doesn't get better :/
