I'd settle for simply better than Virgil's. Boylan cream soda, drunk good and cold, is worth trying once. They make a cola, but I haven't tried any of their other drinks.
Not sure about head and shoulders above Virgil's but a friend of mine out in Washington tuned me in to a Root Beer called Bulldog root beer. Uses natural vanilla and cane sugar. One of the best I have had. Another brand, Hank's Root Beer is really good too. These are both sweeter than Virgil's though.
ok this just a question for you soda nerds in general, but why no one wanna take on coke and dr. pepper flavors, and only seem to do:
1 a root beer
2 a cherry
3 an orange
4 a cream soda (maybe?)
Fentiman's Curiosity the only soda I know of that does Coke better than Coke. There's also Maine Root's "Mexicane Cola", which is delicious but much more like standard Coca Cola than Fentiman's vintage, when-coke-had-cocaine herbal take on cola.
