He said it would be digital... was me speculating on the dsd/mqa -- based on their stance about those.

    What's the Moffat quote?

Moffat said in an interview he got the idea for the gadget when remembering his days in a blue grass group and why older more expensive instruments sounded better than new ones.

    Pretty big clue.

They said it would be something never before seen or attempted.

Jason said it would be a 'new product' announcement this week, nothing specific about Manhattan Project.

I assumed it would be Modibit, but Gungnir are 'out of stock' on the Schiit website o_O

Righto, this is the line of thinking to follow. I believe the difference between new and old instruments is in the resonant quality of the material - as in the wood/varnish of the instrument body, in the case of Stratovarius. Perhaps there is something about the aging process, or perhaps it's just about something they did differently when making instruments. In any case, I interpret this to mean that he is thinking about how materials affect resonance/sound. And therefore... well, that's as far as I get.

Hmmm... simulate 2nd (or 3rd) order microphonic tube harmonics, digitally?

A digital device that adjusts resonances to mimic different materials?

Interesting idea but I'm not sure that would work for tracks with different multiple instruments.

I think Moffats quote is a good hint but I think we are being too specific about it. Its probably something more general. He's talking about better sound in general I think because of an old instrument.

i believe what you want is called a mixer? like an actual console or portable mixer if talking bout leveling and mixing sources together or separating/cutting them. there is tons of different source equalization from acive dsp/crossovers or stand alone active parametric eq's but, you're talking a decent penny here and there.

Like with sampling rates, you can increase the range that can be captured, but you cannot introduce more dynamics or depth into a recording without fundamentally altering the recording using an expander or something. That would be a huge no-no.

Your all-encompassing Burrito idea got my mind turning but then again, why would you need to run it through the burrito if you could just go straight from the source? Unless you're using it to transfer stuff but Jason said pretty firmly that they have no plans for an ADC at this time. If you mean digital sources you can't take out the delta sigma from the original ADC. Unless...you could...

More refined phono seems like a really obvious candidate and I hope they do it soon. Not one of their groundbreaking secret projects, I don't think, but under $1000 so much of it is just very cheap components, and seeing how well some of them respond to power supply mods or better caps proves that a company like Schiit could really blow away many competitors with careful design, direct to consumers at ~$300-500.

Maybe you're onto something ... Music/Instruments have become a lot more digitalized nowadays vs then.
