New signups by nomination from existing members. Randos are initially tagged "____s Friend", so it's on you (to a certain extent) if they start shitting in threads...

Two-month wait before privilege to post/message/do anything but read. If a new member is still around, they've possibly learned how to add value through thier reading/watching. Many will give up at login when they read that.

    hello,

why is it so hard for folks to make the effort to follow very simple rules?

introduce yourself. lurk and read for awhile before posting. research before asking a question to see if it has already been addressed.

do NOT come in with a completely contrarian opinion right out of the box and expect to be given a big, sloppy, wet kiss.

do NOT make one of your first five posts a "gear for sale" one.

is this simply an entitlement thing? is being civil and learning a forum's culture just too much of a bother?

but then, i am most likely in the oldest 5% of the membership here. and, also most likely, i am in the 5% with the most hearing loss. and i know there are folks here with much, much, more experience in the hobby than i. who are able to try more gear and higher end gear than i will ever be able to. more than likely these folks are younger than i am as well. so f'ing what!

as i have said before, this is a safe place, with very knowledgeable members, disagreements happen, but for the most part they are handled with humour, large grains of sodium, and (forgive me) grace.

is that so hard to understand?

Culling should not affect non-contributors who are not adding noise. Simply lurking, asking an intelligent question etc. should be OK - not everyone has the cash/talent/desire to contribute. Extracting another HD650 opinion from a non-contributor so they can stay registered will likely add little.

It seems Marv also accepts the notion of contributing personality on some social level, but I don't know how you police that.

Wait, by "nothing", you're referring to unnecessary negativity and not activity level, right?

I don't participate much, but that's because I want to reserve posts for sharing detailed impressions based on first-hand experience and comparisons with common reference equipment. Also, l want to read and learn from the content and community here before I start becoming more active.

I imagine that a lot of people are in the same boat, so I hope non-participation won't result in culling.

Some people will create an account now, and start contributing in 1.73 years. That's fine. As long as people aren't actively distracting the community, there's no need for cultural revolutions or similar purges...
But I suspect that's precisely what @Marvey has in mind: actively deal with active disruptions, and not bother with anything else as time is spent more productively elsewhere.

I wouldn't worry about it, there's more to contributing to a community than gear impressions. Based on what you've contributed here so far and on /r/headphones you'll be fine, just keep doing what you're doing.

Unrelated, did you ever figure out who that barley guy was?

Thanks! No, never did find out who that guy was -- I'll leave it as one of life's great mysteries.

If SBAF closes its borders permanently it would be excluding potential future great members that would offer their own honest experience and friendship. There is a risk of stagnation as growth is impaired.

Automatically keeping first few posts to the intro threads only is a good idea.

Furthermore I would suggest opening the 'borders' say once every 2 months or so for a week only. Someone who is dedicated enough to join and not post noise would probably sit it out, read the threads, learn the culture and register during the designated week.

I like the way the Barkley Marathons does it.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barkley_Marathons

    Registration: (from Wikipedia)
"The Barkley is limited to 40 runners, and usually fills up quickly the day registration opens. Requirements and times to submit an entry application are a closely guarded secret, with no details advertised publicly. Potential entrants must complete an essay on "Why I Should be Allowed to Run in the Barkley", pay a $1.60 application fee, and complete other requirements subject to change. If accepted, an entrant receives a "letter of condolence"."

To anyone interested, check out the documentary on Netflix. Insane and hilarious.

It's not hard. But it is in the nature of the shitpost rando to have trouble reading and following these kinds of simple rules. It's a Scorpion and the Frog thing.

I stopped short of a dislike, but cordially invite you to read "Lord Of The Flies".

Read it when I was 10 years old. No need to be passive agressive, click the dislike button if you think I deserve it.

Believe me, that's not aggressive, passive or otherwise, merely gently despairing. Try re-reading the book as an adult, as you seem to have missed the lesson. Institutionalised dog-piling is not a good thing; be excellent to each other.

If we're down on purge by vote, how about purge by RNG?

I can just imagine this going horribly sideways with RNGesus smiting all of the staff and the place descending into chaos.
