Windows 7 was released July 22, 2009; 9 years ago!

    Is anybody still using this?

It is still deployed widely commercially, large businesses are very conservative when it comes to rolling out and managing tens of thousands of pc’s

I’m sure there are still millions of folks who feel no compulsion to upgrade their home systems either. They will take whatever comes on a machine when they buy it.

I know very few people who use High End DACs connected to PCs in a commercial environment.
There really is no excuse to be using an Operating System that is 9 years old considering the security implications.
Just like with Internet Explorer; The time has come for Windows 7 to go!!

I understand it might be complicated to support both Unison and Gen.5 but it would be great to have a possibility to upgrade to Unison by request. Many people are already on Windows 10 or even Mac/Linux and don't care about Windows 7 anymore. I would really like my Gungnir MB to have Unison.

Screw Windows 7. I mean if someone is still using it for audio they can go with something non-Unison, or upgrade. I want Unison now!

Put a disclaimer on the product page saying "Not compatible with Windows 7" and call it good.

    Jason covered this on Headfi:
    Bolding added by me.

I take that as meaning Unison will come to the upgradable DACs that can swap USB cards first. Unison embedded in other products, like Modi, will be later when Win 7 is officially dead.

Schiit have their reasons for this. Probably because as much as you tell people “only compatible with X” they will still call support and cry and moan on forums etc that Schiit sucks. At least once Win 7 is dead, there’s no legitimate argument. And for those with one of the upgradable DACs, stick with Gen 5. I agree it would probably make sense to offer the option of one or the other, on their upgradable DACs, if they’re going to offer Unison before Win 7 is axed. But their smaller single board DACs? No.

Win 7 EOL is January 2020, so it's not too long of a wait before it's unsupported anyway. Time to upgrade if you're still on it.

Personally, I am happy enough with gen 5 that the upgrade would have to be damn near free and self-installed for me to have any interest at all. But then again, my opinion is irrelevant. Thought I would share it anyway just for fun.

I have a serious case of good enough, but if I happened to hear it, who knows?

Hi guys, this is my first post here and I'm glad to stumble across someone who actually listen these things, not just citing specs and graphs.

I just got Modi 3 few days ago and I agree with many opinions written before - it is a very nice sounding device. Sounds fast, precise and tidy with lots of texture in tones and thick mid-range that I like. In comparison Topping D30 is like a blunt tool missing some finesse. Topping D50 is overzealous and can be too edgy and sharp. Also lacks the mid-range fullness and when you put all of that together it often attacks my ears so I get tired quickly.

If it weren't for Khadas Tone Board (sold just as a board without a case so maybe it doesn't even count as a complete device), Modi 3 would be my favorite DAC so far. But compared to KTB, Modi 3 Is more of a smooth talker, it's always polite and pleasant but it's also softening some things that in my opinion should have some byte or glare. Just an example of this - I was watching a movie last night and there was a loud car crash with metal and glass breaking... Modi 3 somehow managed to make it sound mild and inoffensive. Playing the same thing through KTB made the whole collision grunt, metal squeaking and braking glass sound more realistic and present. This was just an example but same goes for music, Modi 3 sounds controlled and pleasant but Khadas Tone Board usually offers more dynamics and sounds more alive and present while not actually loosing any insight.

But as far as finished devices go I think Modi 3 is as good as it gets in this price range.

Have you ever been in a car crash?

Actually, I've been in two smaller ones... but I don't need that experience at all. If you ever heard a metal on metal scratching or just banged two metal pots together, broke some glass... you can hear the intensity and zest of those sounds.

Modi 3 is politely softening some passages and edges. It's not obvious in many musical genres and songs, especially if you don't compare it with anything more dynamic and lively. I still prefer it to most DACs at this price point as I mentioned.

It seems slightly ridiculous to contemplate a DDC that costs more than a DAC, but is there a tangible benefit to using Eitr with Modi3?

I do think the spdif in sounds better than the USB. More clarity. Could be placebo.

The USB input is quite good. For me it didn’t sound noticeably better with the Eitr.

Thanks to both. I am really enjoying Modi3 with Vali2 and HD600. Nice tone and clarity. However, it sounds a bit more ‘digital’ than other schiit DACs with Gen5 that I have heard. I guess I am left wondering if it is a limitation of the USB input or the DS DAC itself.

The USB on Modi 3 surprised me with how not fucked it sounded. Quite good, better than I'm used to hearing with schiit usb.

Personally I couldn't hear any difference between USB and coaxial, at least in my system. If anybody's interested I made a video review about it too:
