I was talking with a friend yesterday about how so much of today's pop, hip-hop, even rock, follows the same formula. ~4 minutes of the same over and over. So we started rattling off songs of yore, epic pieces that build to amazing crescendos.

    Some examples -

Led Zepplin - Stairway to Heaven
Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do
    Yes - Roundabout
    Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

    What are your favorites?

I'm not a huge GNR fan but that tragically epic outro for November Rain gets my vote.

"Welcome To The Jungle" is my favourite. The entire album "Appetite For Destruction" is full of crescendos really. It is still an epic Rock & Roll album.

When I read the thread title I instantly thought of Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight.

It's by no means a favorite of mine. Was/is still played to death on FM. But oh the memories of all the performances of drunken air drumming I have witnessed.

Mike Oldfield is a great practitioner of the crescendo, Crises, Tubular Bells etc. My favorite though would be In Dulci Jubilo:

I always like how Second Hand News broke the mold, so to speak, by putting the chorus and guitar solo at the very end only. Makes an upbeat song very dramatic at the very end...

I've heard Ravel's Bolero be described as the greatest song in history to make love to, but it's 15 minutes long.

The theme song to 2010 Space Odyssey seems much more realistic... :)

This is a little older, and starts loud as well.

Makes you appreciate when bands actually work hard at keeping the music interesting.

When Neil Peart does his drum transition just before the drop I simply freak out. Prog owes so much to Neil Peart's drumming style with those small solos and fills.
