I trialed the XM3s on a sale a while back. They felt bass heavy to me, and it felt like they had a bit of a scoop in the mid-treble. For a mobile headset they didn't strike me as too offensive though. I ended up sending them back because the ear cups sat just a bit weird on me.

 

yep, the WH-1000XM3 sound like sony's which is to say they're bass heavy. fine for TV, not as great for music.

For TV, I use the Sennheiser RS120 II headphones, which I think are technically discontinued, but still available for purchase. They have better range than Bluetooth, allow multiple headphones for a single transmitter, & have great battery life. They're also open-back but don't leak much sound. I suppose some people may have fit issues with them though. They are on-ear, but have a very light clamp on my head, so I find them comfortable (unlike most on-ear headphones). I originally bought them thinking I'd likely upgrade to a more expensive set in the RS line but never bothered since these were perfectly fine & much cheaper.

You can also check out the Wirecutter's picks; though, I haven't used any of them.

 

XM3 for a little more balanced tonality and XM4 for a little stronger noice canceling. Either not by much.
For music, Apple's Airpod max pro was a clear step up from both audiophile and ANC perspectives. Connection to non-apple devices could be either poor or very tricky tho.

I kinda like Bose's QC35 over any of Sony's ANC cans.
