Yeah - At the moment appears to be that guy with all the gear and no idea (as far as we know), and also he has the biggest audience in the online headphone world hanging on his every word.

This is the same sort of manipulation that religious zealots and propagandists use. In order to control you need to establish yourself as a de facto authority by virtue of having an inside line on the truth which is unattainable by mortals - in this case the uber expensive measurement gear. Then you discredit those who speak with their own authority (however established), and gather a crowd of adherents to your truth. Once done, you can leverage those adherents to act in accordance with your proclamations without question. Yes, I'm pushing it too far, but the mechanism is the same.

    @Marvey

I was indeed referring to Changstar, as it'll always be the beginning of things in my opinion. Getting the community to grow and learn is the next step, and the reason I didn't think twice before putting down money on the inception of sbaf, as well as others here.

That said, I feel we should never forget where we're coming from. Both because I feel honesty is the only way to get a healthy community, and because I'd hate seeing the reproduction of music become a second thought in this hobby.

And that, not the drama fest, is the bottom line of this thread.

Yes, this is why Jude is so dangerous. I know the subjective guys will retort that they don't necessarily want accurate or undistorted; but there will always be such gear. People who want their Grados, MDR-Z1Rs, TH-900s Ultrasones, will always have them. And they can always pay as much as they want for them too. I don't have a problem with that. I've done it myself and will continue to do so.

The underserved people right now are those who want fairly neutral (not necessarily perfectly, but this is impossible anyway) and undistorted gear for decent prices.

Count me as underserved. o_O Not completely, I have you guys, but the prices are over serving my wallet. I'm in real danger of being priced out of the hobby.

When did it become acceptable for $2000 headphones to sound worse than $300 JBL pro monitors? It wasn't that long ago that the Grado RS-1 was considered idiosyncratic and extremely expensive at $700?

Why are we now paying $2200 for idiosyncratic stuff?

    What the hell?

    Wake up people!

You know who I blame for all this? Jude.

It would be interesting to see what the price inflation rate has been on hi-fi gear over the last 5 to 7 years. Way way higher than the base inflation rate I am sure.

$300 low-cost, budget pro monitors. To put it bluntly, cheap active speakers.

(No disrespect to the speakers: I'm convinced they would suit me wonderfully if I could get them at USA prices)

Look at the cost of good sound over the decades. From something available only to the wealthy, it became more and more available (1970s and on?) to those on lesser and even ordinary incomes. I don't know, but I don't think that trend ever reversed. Except that it remained possible for those who want to spend a vast amount of money to do so. And the price of a pair of HD600s fell through the floor. Just after I bought mine!

What some sites have done is push the necessity of high spending. This has not inflated, but extended, high-end pricing, coupled with the marketing ploy that all that went before, or even current lower-cost stuff, is either no good or, at best, a stepping stone to the high end. For end, read price.

I know that, while I was buying (and, ok, I still get twinges) I certainly wanted more expensive gear. But the price of ordinarily good, if not damned good, gear has not gone up.

+1 the RS1 critique. They're crazy beautiful headphones and do certain genres very well, but for someone who can't afford multiple pairs of cans they're practically verboten. This is why the pair I had went back to their previous owner with a new pair of pads.

This is an excellent way of putting it. It's basically the financial equivalent of all the e-peen-ing getting slapped around the audio forums of late— a huge case of "I can spend more than you without having to worry about food, never mind that there probably isn't any actual sonic benefit to diamond-encrusted beryllium diaphragms or Ethiopian sheepskin pads. I'M NOT COMPENSATING."

Jokes aside, with rare few exceptions like the Andros or the HD800 I'm still ostensibly saving up for, "high-end" just sounds like an alternative to buying a Montblanc 149 without really liking the pen or a gigantic ATV for urban driving. Or whatever those "I'm making up for my actual peen being underdeveloped" cars are called.

Fair play, I appreciate you're taking the high road on the issue. I think Jude's getting off lightly but that's probably why I don't work in a public-facing job :)

and @Thad E Ginathom your right there's still a lot of amazing gear that's priced fairly, I really like what MassDrop has done... and I remember when you couldn't speak of "that site" on head fi lol good on @Will for sticking to his guns an continuing to bring amazing gear priced to be more accessible to everyone and for working to research and refine their collaberations

Hmm, I wonder what you had to do to deserve the "Garmentus Vulgaris" custom title on HF...
