I would just add the empty slot anyway to all your amps if you find out that it doesn't cost more. I mean it's better to have the option rather then not and if there is no increase in cost then it shouldn't matter. On top of that you already have the add-on cards for the Jotunheim so you shouldn't need to redevelop custom cards for all the other amps. Although I understand if this doesn't happen because each one has a unique power supply and you would have to standardize the DAC/Phono power for all the amps. On top of that every future card needs to run on the same power.

As far as an add-on R2R goes, I wonder if there is enough room to have a stacked card? Sort of like how Arduino has shields or Raspberry Pi has HATs. Or maybe you can discard the proprietary filter and there might be enough R2R magic to satisfy peeps for a lower price.

Schiit ruined my DIY plans twice in a couple months. First I was going to build an R2R DAC with one of the Soerkris cards but then Schiit came out with the Modi MB with closed form filter for far less money then I would be able to make a finished product. Then I was going to make a balanced super symmetry amp, I even have the PCBs but haven't ordered the parts. Now they come out with the Jotunheim priced almost exactly at what I was planning on spending. Son of a bitch! It's like their reading my mind.

As someone who currently belongs in that camp, I'm following the transducers>amp>DAC rule of thumb when it comes to upgrades. Coming from a Modi 2U 4396, the dual 4490 probably won't be a noticeable bottleneck, and when I'm ready to upgrade, there's ton of options in the lineup.

In addition to a potential future multibit card, I'd be curious to see if the new chassis design permeates through the rest of the line. A balanced DAC in the desktop form factor would be nice too, but not sure where it fits with the rest of the (current) lineup.

I just knew it'd pay off to wait on jumping on a new amp
Not sure if it was intended, but occurred to me as I read it -- DIY (wink wink) vs. the wife - helluva cost savings. Though not saying it would be better. :p

I hear you. To add a bit more information regarding the feasibility of "card-izing" the line, a few points to consider:

    1. The cards will likely be different for an SE product, unless I can figure out how to stuff them two different ways. Not a gigantic deal, really, but something to consider.
    2. Available voltage rails are an issue for Valhalla, but not for other amps. Valhalla is a big redesign if we wanted to add a card.
    3. Heat is the more interesting challenge, if we want to use similar chassis--losing the bottom aluminum isn't trivial as far as heatsinking goes. Not that it couldn't be managed, but it is an issue.

Again, just a few reasons I don't know how it'll go in the future.

Jason, How about 3rd module, a simple 2nd SE input. Does that even require active circuitry? Maybe even have that included by default instead of the sticker :)

Also, do you plan on publishing the pinout spec? Bet a bunch of piZERO daughter boards will pop up!

Even better. Now you guys don't have to worry about SE input being gimped.

Would you pay $30 more for another SE input? Because that's about what it would cost, all in, fully burdened.* Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

*Remember this is not DIY, we have to take into account the impact on manufacturing, service, ordering, etc as a whole.

@Marvey - So I'm going to connect both Yggdrasil SE and XLR to Jotunheim and switch til my ears bleed.

Interested in this also... Mani's 3 gain stages vs. Joti's 2 & balanced.

However Decca mode on the Mani spec wise looks better. (I use that with a 5.5v MM cart)

I'm gonna let her cook for a while before doing any impression tonight...

Yeah, this is how the rear will look like if you don't have any input card in there. The front is just as sexy as other Schiit amps.

A very good and sensible suggestion. Bring back the "AUX" input :)

Well the "cost savings" argument was a helluva lot better than the aesthetics argument

Nah, we need to bring the "Tape" input back.

You know what I would really like to have back? Bass and treble tone controls. For headphones, 90Hz and 7kHz.

Man oh man, I really wish that Schiit had brought some other DACs to the Schiit Show, the Jotunheim sounds like a different amp entirely with the Bifrost Multibit.
