Games get more and more bloated every year because they have to take into account the infinite configurations of a PC. Consoles are basically the same hardware for everyone so they can optimize a lot more.
Also CUDA sucks balls to code in, so it much easier to write code that just runs than to optimise it for efficiency. Based on a colleague who writes CUDA for academic work
The main issue facing pc for the last several years is shader compilation stutter, which isn’t unique to unreal engine 4, but it seems to be the primary culprit. Alex at Digital Foundry has been putting games on blast when they have serious shader comp stutter and there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel.
some recent high profile UE4 games have shader compilation steps before you play the game and UE5 has systems in place to asynchronously compile shaders right before you need them. So here’s hoping 2023 is the year of very little shader comp stutter!
Yeah you should! Back when I was a teen i had the time and patience to tweak and research but now i just want to be able to relax and game at the end of a work day. I've got enough other hobbies taking up my time..
Be prepared to get frustrated at controller longevity though. If you game a few hours a day you're going to wear out a controller in a year. You could use a keyboard and mouse though
@Skyline I actually agree with this alot. when the series x came out I got one, and played more games in the following year that id played on my pc in like the 5 years preceding.
But for me there's competing forces. I like not having to f**k with the pc. I hate spending time keeping drivers updated, tweaking settings, etc. but I also hate a compromised in visuals/performance experience, which as we get further into the generation is happening a lot more
If getting a PS5 be prepared to look at a white chick who is wearing a thong, that's what the PS5 looks to me. For the XBox the Series X looks like an awesome rocker launcher. End of the day it come down to the games. The PS5 is more focused on western gaming tastes but still have PS4 support and those weird Japan only games that is only on PS4/5.
XBox is western gaming focus with limited Japanese game support, but has Game Pass and more flexibility on hardware/software than PS5 IMO. Switch has the most Japanese only gaming support (which is where most of my taste relies), but now aged hardware. I wish the Xbox has more Japanese gaming support since I prefer than over PS5.
@Cspirou my colleague is re-coding statistical models in C++ to speed them up, and hence CUDA to run in parallel on GPUs. Debugging is reportedly a pain in the arse
as for optimization, the most recent high profile release that I think has no right to run as bad as it does is Forspoken, but that runs like garbage on console too, its under 1080p native render resolution for 60fps on a ps5 and in many ways looks worse than ff15. What recent high profile releases have worse "optimization" on pc than console?
@SoupRKnowva Every release has worse optimization than console and that's okay and normal, what I'm and bitching about is the delta over the years. Just look at Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy. At minute 11 look at the performance WITH DLSS! the 3070ti has no right hovering in the 60s and dipping in the 20s for several seconds, that's a $600 card from a year and half ago.
I dont really think youre examples prove anything. BFV is a very performant first person shooter, there are examples of those today as well, Doom Eternal or the new Call of Duty are good examples. But i wouldnt compare them to open world RPGs, the game requirements are very different. not to mention there were similar tiers of games before, i dont see any sort of negative trend. its always been this way.
You know not all BFV is FPS same with Far Cry games, both look much better and run times better than either of those games. Same with Assassin Creed and those are true TP games.
my point is that there has always been a bell curve if you will of perf vs surface level visual quality, and comparing a game that is very much so far to the right to ones in the bottom third and saying there's a large scale trend is bogus imo. no one is out there saying ER is a technical masterpiece, it isn't. and by the same token, there are current games that are just as performant as BFV.
I do however think games generally launch in worse shape than they should now, I rarely play them right at launch, preferring for bugs to get worked out for the first month or two.
