Transients, extension, spatial
EDIT: Actually, I don’t know why I left out tone. While quite some variance is ok with me, some stuff just isn’t, like too much treble. So tone is actually the most important one, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be totally cohesive.
In headphone context or 2 ch?
In hp 3d room and instrument space is thrown out of the prio list.
In 2 ch it is defo in top 3.
Tonal quality (intactness, naturalness and balance) and resolution (prerequisite is low distortion and adequate transient behavior) are always in top 3 in both cases. Extension is cheap trick unless the other parameters are in place.
It depends but ideally, I need 2:
- tone - not FR, but traits of sound
- realistic transients - much harder said than done because not all instruments have tight transients
excusable:
headphone extension - can't over come physics
low distortion - distortion can be made to sound good. see electronics in music.
good spatial - very nice to have, but can succeed with ok enough spatial. see hd580/600/650.
