I saw that one coming, I think we're all a little retarded. There's much bigger things to worry about and stress over isn't there ? If I don't want to buy chinese stuff especially now, does that make me racist ? I don't buy german cars either... Also what Lyander said ! I bet Psalm would be fun at a megadeth show, he would probably tell everyone what the best beer is. Then he would buy every round...

It is just these moral rangers, they believe they can fall on their safe spot which is delusional. Like leaning to the political left, just because. (btw, I am quite unsure where one should sit in the modern world, best to have a mix of everything that is considered normal). Sometimes these more harsh speaking people are more right than wrong and have lived trough stuff and they don't need some imaginary safety net of "decency." Hospitality should be valued but SBAF is reasonable in this field imo.

 

I tend to stay away from people that lean extremely one way or another. I find the people that have these severe safe spots or issues with any little word the most dangerous. I work with a lot of people that are hugely judgmental but are poor workers and usually slobs.

 

Everything gets painted black and blue for them and they couldn't h-a-n-d-l-e it. Lame and disrespectful...

Well they’re actual gear tunings that the better gear from each country largely obeys.

Brit-fi is the only way to get the most resolving drivers on the planet and only active speakers with uncompromised plate amps. The British tuning just needs to be acquiesced to.

Same with west coast hifi. It is still a thing. Different gear is popular out there compared to the east coast and it’s still stereotypically fat and sharp.

@bboris77 thicken up the skin man, it’s an internet forum, and it’s SBAF - the warnings are right in the logo: Not normal. 9 year olds. And you’ve been a member since 2015 - none of this is atypical. If this level of name calling offends you this badly, you’re right, it’s probably not the right place for you. However if you get over it (as some do) hopefully you’ll take things in stride a bit more and just ignore. Either way, peace man.

 

Is Topping rebranded SMSL or vice versa, @Psalmanazar? I’ve always wanted to know which is the “legit” company and which is the rebrand. SMSL being legit makes sense, since their VMV stuff is the only interesting Topping/SMSL products I’ve seen.

I’m a SJW BernieBro type, and I don’t see how “Chi-Fi” is offensive. I’ve always assumed it refers to Chinese Hi-Fi companies, and encompasses a wide range of stuff in terms of quality — not just Topping but also good stuff like Matrix.

The problem with Topping ain’t that it’s Chinese, it’s that it’s built like crap, sounds like crap, and has no U.S. support (which is why reputable sites that sell Topping offer their own warranty, like APOS). I owned the D30 before SBAF had the loaner, and it was the absolute worst DAC I’ve ever heard.

(Having worked with kids with developmental disabilities, I’d prefer no one use “retard.” But I’m also not going to derail a thread over it.)

 

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just trying to connect some old, dim brain cells here, like how do I remember Topping?

I remember it as something really cheap which those adventurous enough to buy from China (before the age of Ali Express) could buy and have a DAC that sounded a bit better than it should have done at the price. Then, like Marks and Spencer, who made a fortune selling underwear to Britain but failed at becoming a boutique brand* Topping decided to look nicer and put the prices up.

Am I anywhere near right? Or is this another four out of sixteen, like I just scored in an online history quiz?

I did like my Filo DAPs except for their software. Exceptions do exist, but, exceptions.

I had a ESound CD player way back when. Heavy thick case, and sounded decent for its time. Fake Phillips laser assembly kept going bad. Replace it 2x and sold it.
Didn’t learn my lesson picked up a DIY 4398 Dac off eBay, used It with output transformers.
Sounded pretty good. Broke after two years. No more Chinese stuff. Only buying American stuff and from Countries that are our allies. American Schiit much much better
Pass Labs, Eminent Tech, Schiit (all great American companies) + Supratek (Aussie’s know audio) Yeah no Topping for me!

 

This thread made me pull out my D50 and try it again. While you all were talking about “feelings” and other boring shit I did some testing.

Set the Bifrost 2 on input 1 of the Saga and the D50 on input 2. Output dB matched so easy enough to AB. Both are supplied from the Pi2AES with the Bifrost getting the coax and the D50 getting the TOSLINK.



Yup. Still has glare and fuzzy bass. Imaging is weak, not very enjoyable really. Damn you ASR! Well, at least it feels like a solid bit of kit
